Sunset View Newsletter
Week of October 7th
Message from Jennifer
Thank you to Nicole Cooley and her team of volunteers that helped that helped make our annual Walk to School Day such a fun event! I loved seeing so many families gathered in the Peet's parking lot drinking coffee, eating donuts and bananas, and admiring the SDPD motorcycles. I so enjoyed chatting with parents, students, and staff members as we made the very foggy walk to school, escorted by the SDPD motorcade. The kids were so excited to get police badge stickers and pose with McGruff (thank you Trevor Blair). What incredible community spirit!
Don't forget, our October Sunset View Cares Project, Socktober, kicks off this week! Our fourth graders are collecting new socks for our San Diego unhoused community and will be at the flag pole each morning before school. This Friday, October 11th, is Crazy Sock Day!
THIS WEEK IS: A WEEK
FAST Score Reports
The purpose of this report is to provide you with information about how your child is performing in this subject at the start of the school year. Understanding your child’s strengths and areas for improvement can help you and the school to support their learning journey. This is only one assessment and one piece of information, and should not cause alarm if the results indicate any at risk levels. Your children's teachers use this assessment along with other data to inform their practice and plan curriculum. Your child's teacher will reach out individually if they have specific concerns.
New Enrichment Teacher - Rebekah D'Ascoli
At long last we are excited to welcome our permanent 3rd Enrichment teacher, Rebekah D'Ascoli! She will take over teaching responsibilities this week and is excited to bring her unique curriculum to Sunset View. She's spent the last weeks planning and preparing and is ready to hit the ground running. Please see the links below for her letter of introduction and a description of the learning.
A huge thank you goes out to Kendall Vespi who stepped in and taught the class for the last several weeks as we waited for Rebekah to be processed by the district. Her flexibility and willingness to try a new curriculum allowed all students to enjoy Enrichment.
Habit 2: Begin With the End in Mind
Begin With the End in Mind focuses on “What Matters Most.” Talk with your kids about what matters most to them. For example, if kindness matters most, then talk about what they can do to be kind. To show kindness, I can...help my classmates, use kind words, walk my neighbor’s dog. Some other examples of what might matter most are: forgiveness, fairness, respect, creativity, loyalty, friendliness, awareness, acceptance, generosity, neatness, honesty. Effective leaders know what is most important to them.
ENROLLMENT OPTIONS SCHOOL CHOICE WINDOW OPENING
The Priority Choice Application Window for the 2025-2026 school year will open Monday, September 23, 2024 and closes on Monday, November 4, 2024. Remember it is not on a first come, first served basis. A lottery will be conducted in January 2025 with email notifications following soon after.
Friendly Reminders
Please bring in a Picture for Our Community Bulletin Board!
Please bring in a picture of your family to add to our community bulletin board! Pictures can be sent to your child's classroom teacher and we will take care of the rest.
Attendance
Please do not send your child to school when they are sick.
When your child must be absent for any reason, please call the office at 858-988-2000 by 9:30 a.m. every day of non-attendance, giving the exact reason for the absence. You can also email sunselm@sandi.net.
Any child arriving after 9:00 a.m. must stop in the office and pick up a tardy slip. Let's set good habits early in the school year to arrive on time.
Parking
We have very limited parking around Sunset View Elementary. The front of the school is now a 3 minute loading zone. Please be kind to our neighbors by keeping their driveways open and free. The staff parking lot is only for staff and we kindly request that you do not enter the lot. We also strongly encourage you to model good habits for your children by using the crosswalks. Running across Hill St. in front of the school and/or having children exit cars in the middle of the street is dangerous. Please pass this important message along to anyone who may be picking up your children (grandparents, child care provider, etc.). Your child's safety is always top priority and never an inconvenience. We appreciate your help.
