LISD School Newsletter

A Note from Dr. Martin
Hello LISD Families,
We are back in the swing of school after that much-needed and enjoyed mid-winter break. Teachers are preparing for spring conferences to be held March 24-28. For conferences week, elementary students will be released at noon every day, and secondary students will be released at noon on Wednesday through Friday. Elementary students will have lunch at school every day that week, and secondary students will have lunch at school on Monday and Tuesday, with a robust mid-morning nutrition break on Wednesday through Friday.
The secondary staff is working hard to plan intensive courses, which will happen the week of March 31- April 4. Intensives are a departure from regular classes and an opportunity for students to choose something different to learn about that week. This year, our intensive courses are Asian & Tex Mex Cooking, Lobo Challenge, "Sur-Thrival", Museum Quest, Nature Based Art, Board Games...the Long Ones, and Hiking & Biking. Secondary students completed a survey and each student was placed in one of their top three course choices.
The elementary staff is planning a Celebration of Learning to be held the evening of April 2, 5:30-6:30. Families and visitors will have an opportunity to visit ALL elementary classrooms to see the projects and products that have been engaging our students most recently. Project based learning is one of the themes emerging from our Portrait of a Graduate focus synthesis, so I hope you'll come out on April 2 to see what's happening in our elementary classrooms.
I hope you all have a lovely weekend. I'll be spending my Saturday night chaperoning the 70s themed high school dance and hoping I see some go-go boots, bell bottoms, headbands, bold prints, and disco inspired outfits.
All my best,
Martha

March is Music In Our Schools Month

Family Math Night was a Huge Hit!
The 3rd and 4th graders and their families had a great time playing math games at Game Night last Wednesday! It was so successful and fun we’re going to continue math game night monthly. Math is fun!!
9th Graders Visit Seattle Children's Discovery Lab
Ninth grade Biology class went to Seattle Children's Discovery Lab where they used gel electrophoresis to perform a DNA fingerprinting experiment. They learned how scientists can use this method to investigate outbreaks of food borne illness or in criminal investigations. Students also listened to a career talk and learned about a summer apprenticeship opportunity. This is such a great field trip for our students. Thank you to Joe Behnke and the parent chaperones for making it happen!

Senior Profile - Silas Gronley
What clubs/athletics/extracurriculars have you been involved in?
I’ve played basketball since I was in 10th grade, and this year I’m signing up for track. I just figured it’s my last chance to do a high school sport.
What is one positive memory from your time here that you’ll carry with you forever?
I don’t have one specific positive memory. I’ll remember sitting in class with my friends, laughing about stupid things, and all those little experiences.
Finish this sentence: “I cannot live without…….”
My pet rabbit, Rosie, my home projects (cars, trucks, boats, etc.), and my dreams.
What is one piece of advice you have for incoming high school students?
Get your work done early so you don’t have the anxiety of having to finish something at the last minute….even though I’m most productive when I have a time crunch. Also, enjoy high school while it lasts because it’s over before you know it.
What is one song that summarizes your graduation from high school?
Life Goes On by Oliver Tree. No matter what, life just keeps going on.
Who/what do you find inspiring?
My father, because of his work ethic. He always gets the job done, even without the proper resources.
What is the most meaningful assignment ever given to you by a teacher?
In 11th grade, I took a Running Start Business 101 class. There was this one assignment about the back story of huge companies that were built from the ground up. It made me think that no matter what kind of life you have or where you come from, you can still be very successful.
What’s the most important quality in a friendship? Why?
Trust and honesty. Even if you don’t see eye to eye on everything, if you trust and are honest with each other, you can still be good friends.
In 10 years, I will be…
I’ll either be doing construction or welding. I want to own my own property and my own business….maybe off island or maybe here. I do really like it here.
What are your plans after high school?
I’m going to take a break from school for a year or so, and help my father out with his construction business. Then I think I want to get into some kind of trade, maybe marine welding.
