Miller Road Construction Project / Transportation Detour Information
The Ann Arbor Public Schools just received notice that the Miller Road construction project will begin on Monday, March 17th, between Seventh and Newport.
This will put 40 bus routes into detour to the following impacted schools: AA Open, Forsythe, Wines, Skyline, & Haisley.
Detour details will also be communicated directly to affected families. City traffic engineers assured AAPS that pedestrian traffic would be maintained at the crossing locations along Miller at both Newport and Seventh, allowing for crossings at both of these locations.
Location and Limits of Affected Area:
Miller Avenue, Newport Road through Seventh Street
Description of Work:
Fonson Company will be installing water main, stormwater drains, road curbs and pavement for the Miller Avenue Rehabilitation project.
Temporary Traffic Control Plan:
Beginning at 9 a.m. on Monday, March 17th, all lanes of Miller Avenue will be closed to traffic from Newport Road through Seventh Street. Eastbound traffic will travel south on North Maple Road, then east on Dexter Avenue, then east on West Huron Street, then north on North First Street back to Miller. Westbound traffic will travel south on North First Street, then west on West Huron Street, then west on Dexter Avenue, then north on North Maple Road back to Miller.
The following intersections with Miller Avenue will also be closed:
Newport Road
Linda Vista Street
Wesley Street
Pomona Road
Red Oak Road
Arborview Boulevard
Cyclists who normally use Miller Avenue are advised to travel to and from downtown Ann Arbor via Dexter Avenue, South Revena Boulevard, and West Washington Street. Local and emergency vehicle access will be maintained. Pedestrian traffic will be maintained, with detours posted as necessary during sidewalk replacement work.
For the safety of all, please reduce speeds and proceed cautiously through the detour route. The city thanks all in advance for their patience.
More information can be found at www.a2gov.org/roads. Visitors to the road or lane closure webpage can also sign up for alerts, via the envelope icon, and can use the WAZE map for a visual representation of closures. In addition, the WAZE app can be downloaded to a phone or other mobile device.

This is a great opportunity to become connected with the school and staff, and to get a first-hand view of the challenges and successes of the high school experiences of your student. PTOC Fundraiser
The PTOC launched their 2025 online fundraiser on March 6th with the goal of boosting PTO funding at Title I schools. They are already seeing tremendous enthusiasm within the community, and they want to keep that energy going!
A bit of background about the fundraiser:
From the PTOC’s 2022 research, they found that PTO income varies across schools in the district with a range of $40 per student per year to $238 per student per year. PTO income is lower at schools with more economically disadvantaged students and at more diverse schools, compounding inequity for AAPS students and families. They are working to improve that.
Together, with the Ann Arbor PTO Thrift Shop, their fundraiser raised over $55,000 in 2024, all of which was distributed to Title I school PTOs with no strings attached. This year, they hope to raise even more, and they would love your help!
The PTOC acknowledges that this fundraiser will not fix inequity and that more robust, ongoing efforts are needed. This is simply one small next step.
How you can help:
The PTO Council has launched their 2025 $20 for $30k Fundraiser. Please consider donating $20 (or more) to help increase Ann Arbor Title I schools’ per pupil spending. If you can’t donate at this time, help spread the word about the fundraiser in our community. Join the effort to create equitable educational opportunities for every child in Ann Arbor!

Upcoming Holidays/ Celebrations
Purim, March 13-March 14, 2025
Purim is a festive Jewish holiday celebrated annually in late February or early March. It commemorates the events recorded in the biblical Book of Esther. This holiday is celebrated by Jews around the world, especially those of Persian descent. It is celebrated by reading the Book of Esther, dressing up in costumes, participating in parades or carnivals, feating, and exchanging food and gifts. Special pastries called “hamantaschen,” are typically filled with fruit or poppy seeds, and are eaten during the holiday.

St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, 2025
St. Patrick’s Day is an annual cultural and religious holiday that celebrates the patron saint of Ireland, Saint Patrick. It is observed on March 17, the traditional death date of Saint Patrick. Originally a religious feast day, St. Patrick’s Day has evolved into a vibrant celebration of Irish culture and heritage. It is widely celebrated by people of Irish descent and those who simply enjoy joining in the festivities. The holiday is marked with various customs and traditions including parades, traditional Irish music and dance, consumption of Irish food and drink, social gatherings where people wear green attire, and decorating with shamrocks. While St. Patrick’s Day is a festive occasion, it is important to remember the cultural and historical significance of the holiday, as well as show respect for Irish traditions and customs. ELL Update
Hello ELL families,
As we begin a new trimester, please remember to access PowerSchool to stay informed about grades. It also shows absences and tardies. If you are not sure how to access PowerSchool, please contact me. I can provide directions in various languages.
I encourage students to talk with teachers and share what is most helpful for their learning, such as extended time, or the use of a dictionary. When teachers know more about their students, they can provide more support.
Please let me know if I can support you or students in any way. I am available to answer any questions.
In the next two weeks we will be administering makeup sessions for WIDA Access for those students who missed their previously scheduled test sessions.
There are many community resources available for a wide variety of needs, including winter giving resources for clothing and gifts, mental health services, and housing help.

Senior Picnic Volunteers Needed!
As we approach the end of the school year, we are gearing up for the much-anticipated senior activities that will create lasting memories for our graduating class. To ensure these events are truly special, we are seeking enthusiastic parent volunteers to join our planning committee.
Our aim is to make the senior year experience exceptional for our 12th graders and their families. We believe that by working together, we can create moments that will be cherished for a lifetime. We invite parents from grades 9, 10, and 11 to step forward and contribute their time and ideas to make this happen (12th grade parents are welcome too).
By coming together as a community, we can share the responsibilities and alleviate the workload on our 12th grade parents, allowing them to fully enjoy and savor these precious moments with their graduating seniors. Your involvement will not only enhance the experience for all students but also strengthen the sense of community within our school.
Whether you have previous event planning experience or are a first-time volunteer, your unique perspective and skills are valuable. We welcome fresh ideas and diverse input to ensure that our senior activities reflect the richness of our school community.
If you are interested in volunteering, please complete the google form linked here . Your commitment, no matter how big or small, will contribute to making our senior year celebrations truly unforgettable.
Let's come together to pay it forward and create magical moments for our seniors. Thank you in advance for your support and dedication to making this a memorable year for all!

Rotary Fights Child Hunger Donation Drive
We have begun the 2025 Rotary Fights Child Hunger Donation Campaign, which will run through Friday, March 14th.
All donations collected go to Food Gatherers, Washtenaw County's only food bank and food rescue program. Food Gatherers distributes to 140 non-profit partners and programs working to alleviate hunger in our community, including Ozone House, Peace Neighborhood Center, Community Action Network, the Shelter Association of Washtenaw County and Hope Clinic.
Hunger is real in Washtenaw County, and many of our friends and neighbors are facing food insecurity. We know that when children have enough food to eat, they can concentrate on doing well in school, playing sports and graduating.
Unfortunately, funding for some federal nutrition and social service programs has recently been paused, and more drastic cuts are expected during the upcoming budget reconciliation process, further increasing food insecurity in our community. Please join with the AAPS this year to help offset federal funding reductions and alleviate child hunger in our community.
AAPS buildings participating in the drive this year will provide more information to staff and students today. If your building is not participating, please visit the Rotary/Food Gatherers website and consider donating through one of the AAPS teams listed.
