From the Principal
Copeland families,
How are we already in February? This week we celebrate National Counseling Week! We are so blessed to have Ms. McArthur at Copeland. She truly has a heart for serving our students, staff, and community. We love you, Ms. McArthur!
This week we also celebrated our 100th day of school, and everyone who dressed up looked amazing! Last week, Wilson Nguyen, won the District Spelling Bee! We are so proud of Wilson and look forward to cheering him on at the Regional Spelling Bee in March.
We are in the beginning of testing season for our 3rd-5th graders, so we ask that you please note the testing days, ensure your child is arriving to school on time, and encourage them to do their best!
We hope you are able to come to our Reading is Sweet Night on Tuesday, February 11th from 5:00-6:30. We will have our annual book bake off and many other engaging activities. It is always a really sweet time! We have student holidays on February 14th and 17th, and we hope you enjoy the long weekend.
Dance Across Texas is on February 28th for Kindergarten, First, and Second grades. Please send your registration form back to school to avoid the long lines the day of the event. Lunch this day will be a grab and go style due to the event taking place in the cafeteria. Students purchasing lunch will be able to select from a Wow Butter box, yogurt box, or a hot dog. We will not be able to serve desserts due to the location of our grab and go serving lines. We can't wait to boot scoot!
Thank you for your continued support of our staff and our school. It is a joy to serve in such an amazing campus and community.

Science Resource Center Brings Hands-on Experiences to Copeland
Kinder Hedgehogs
On February 6th, our Kindergarten classes learned all about hedgehogs! Our amazing volunteers read the childrens' book, The Hat, by Jan Brett, about a hedgehog named Hedgie who lives on a farm. Our students discussed the physical characteristics of a hedgehog and were able to get up-close and personal with Cinnamon, who was on loan from the SRC. Don't worry, she was in a plastic ball!
Copeland Students Bring Home Blue Ribbons
Copeland's Own Wilson Nguyen is the District Spelling Bee Champion!
Wilson Nguyen won the CFISD Spelling Bee on Tuesday, January 28 at the Berry Center. This is the first time a Copeland Colt has won this level! After 23 rounds, Wilson's winning word was succès fou, a French word meaning "an extraordinarily great success", which was very appropriate, indeed. The runner-up was Rika Arun, from Woodard, and the district alternate, Aiden Marshall, comes from our neighbor, Birkes Elementary! Wilson will move on to the next round on March 22nd, when he will represent CFISD at the regional level. The top three spellers at regional will qualify for the national bee. We are so proud of you, Wilson!
Copeland Celebrates 100 Days of Learning with Kindergarten!
Our Kindergarteners are 100 days smarter! Students and staff dressed like 100-year-olds and kindergarteners learned to count to 100 to celebrate this milestone. We absolutely love seeing our kindergarteners fall in love with learning through fun!
Teacher & Para of the Year for 2024-25 Named
Teacher of the Year, Rebecca McConnell
Rebecca McConnell teaches 2nd grade Reading, Language Arts & Social Studies, and is a true superhero! Her kindness and generosity toward her students, combined with her true passion for teaching makes her a shoo-in for this award. We are so proud of her!
Paraprofessional of the Year, Jill Hill
Jill Hill is our Campus Secretary, and she works hard to support Copeland! Ms. Hill works closely with Ms. Berger, manages our calendars and website, programs our marquee and handles our bookkeeping. She is truly a jack-of-all-trades!
Cafeteria Advisory Committee Visits Food Production Center
Students from Copeland were treated to a tour of the CFISD Food Production Center on Thursday, February 7th. Our Cafeteria Advisory Committee is one of many opportunities for students to learn the importance of leadership and service.
The Copeland Library - Our Colts Love Books!
First Book Club of 2025
Copeland's book club met on Thursday, January 23rd to discuss New Dragon City by Mari Mancusi. This book was very popular! Students discussed character development, conflict, surprise twists in the story and so much more! If you aren't reading with your child, you are missing out!
'Reading is Sweet!' to be Held on Tuesday, February 11
Please join us for this family event from 5:00-6:30 on February 11. This come and go celebration of all that is sweet about reading and literacy will be fun for the whole family! There will be opportunities to view and vote on the entries for the bake-off, as well as a variety of STEAM challenges and read-alouds. We will have photo opportunities, Trixie the Library Dog, a table with assorted sweets, and plenty of fun and friends!

Students in grades K-5 will have four opportunities during the school year to use “credit-by-exam” to accelerate to another grade level. Students will only have one opportunity to test for each grade level considered.
To apply to take the test to skip kindergarten, a student must be 5 by September 1, and registered in a CFISD school. To apply to take the test to skip grade 1, a student must be 6 by September 1, and enrolled in a CFISD school.
Students who earn scores of 80% or better on each component of the credit-by-exam will qualify to advance one grade. Only one grade level may be “skipped” each year. No retests will be given.
If you are interested in getting more information about credit-by-exam, please contact the school counselor.
