April is Autism Acceptance Month
As we begin the month of April, we are kicking off our recognition and celebration of Autism Acceptance Month. We have a long history of recognizing and celebrating World Autism Day and Autism Acceptance Month so I have gathered a few resources to extend the information you may already have. The goals of these resources are to:
- Deepen our own understanding of the Autism Spectrum
- Highlight effective instructional strategies
- Provide resources that can be shared with students and families
Before you check out the resources, here are Four Fascinating Facts:
Autism spectrum disorder now affects 1 in 68 children. Boys are nearly 4 times more likely than girls to be diagnosed with ASD.
The term stems from the Greek word ‘autos’ meaning “self”, autism literally means “alone”.
Individuals with autism spectrum disorder have communication deficits. It is important to distinguish between spoken language and social communication deficits.
Individuals with autism spectrum disorder may be very creative and find a passion and talent for music, theater, art, dance and singing quite easily.

Passover
Passover is a Jewish Spring Holiday, known as “The Feast of Unleavened Bread.” It is celebrated by Jewish people for 7 or 8 days. This year it begins in the evening of Monday, April 22nd and ends in the evening of Tuesday, April 30. The significance of Passover is to celebrate freedom from slavery. Family members get to recline on pillows at their seat as a symbol of freedom.
It is customary for families to hold a special family meal called the seder on the first two evenings. At the seder, foods of symbolic significance commemorating the Hebrews’ liberation are eaten, and prayers and traditional recitations are performed.
