Magnolia Elementary Second Grade Landform Projects on Display at Trussville Public Library
What does salt, flour, and water have to do with landforms? Magnolia second graders not only learned about the different landforms, they also created their own maps using salt dough. Students were given a lump of salt dough which they used to create each of the landforms they have studied. After the dough dried, the students painted and labeled their salt dough maps. Parents were invited to be a part of this exciting event. Finally, students made videos of their creations, telling what they learned.
Mrs. Durham's and Mrs. Gamble's students' projects have been on display at the Trussville Public Library October 7-13. Mrs. Swing's and Ms. Wolfe's students' projects will be on display October 14-26.
According to the second-grade teachers: "The project was not only a successful hands-on learning opportunity, it is also an especially exciting way to get the community involved with STEM at Magnolia!"

Cahaba celebrated “Walk and Roll to School” Wednesday, October 12th. Dozens of students and teachers participated in the national event along with 47 other states. Trussville mascots, Hewy and Hewitta welcomed students and teachers as they entered the school. “Walk & Roll to School Day is an opportunity to speak to many different needs of communities across America,” said Nancy Pullen-Seufert, director of the National Center for Safe Routes to School. “For communities that need safety improvements for walking and rolling near schools, this is an opportunity to highlight those needs. For communities looking to change mindsets about how we travel, this one-day event serves as a jumping-off point. Be it a quick-build project or first of its kind collaboration between new community partners, schools, community leaders and families across the country are working together to make active travel to school a safe, convenient transportation option for all.” For many Cahaba families, walking to school is a favorite part of their day. Celebrating this event highlights safety awareness and encourages family participation.
