As we wrap up the year there are some fantastic celebrations to be had. James Cruickshank was part of a team at Sunset beach that performed an incredible rescue on the 27th. The weather made the rescue very risky, but the team did an amazing job to ensure everyone came home safely. James’s service to the Sunset Beach lifeguard club is a great example of whaanaungatanga. We would also like to acknowledge Harry Moss who received top of his class at the MIT trade’s academy awards night last week.

The latest update in our ERO partnership has been loaded up to the school website. We have been using the ERO’s internal evaluation process to look at our progress to date. One of our strengths is our willingness to listen to student voices and create actions as a result of it. You will see this in the 2023 annual plan.

We celebrated our Year 13 leavers last Friday night. Our Year 13’s are going on to some amazing pathways. Many of our Year 13’s are heading off to tertiary study next year with students entering courses in Law, Media Studies, Fine Art, Business, Biochemistry, and Sport and Exercise Science. We also have a number of students in both Years 12 and 13 heading into apprenticeships in building and construction or employment. To all our leavers we wish you all the best with the next part of your journey and look forward to hearing about your successes in the future.

Finally as this is the last newsletter for the year we would like to wish you all a merry Christmas and a happy New Year. We hope you enjoy the summer break and look forward to seeing you all back in 2023. Start dates for 2023 can be found on the school calendar.

Teacher Only Day - Friday 2nd December 2022

Tuakau Christmas Parade

Our school will be entering a float in The Tuakau Christmas Parade this year. This is a fun community event that Onewhero Area School has contributed to for many years. We would like to invite our younger students to travel on our float during the parade.

This year we have chosen a theme of People and Animals. This will allow us to include some of the big props we created for The Arts and Culture Evening to form part of our float.

To enhance our theme students travelling on the float can dress as people in different jobs such as farmers or builders or sports people etc, or they might wish to dress as animals. Students may prefer just to wear bright colours if they wish.

We would like to encourage our younger students between the ages of 5 to 9 to travel on the float. Though if there is room on the day, students of any age and parents are welcome to travel on the float.

Students in Rooms One to Eight will receive a form this week with all the information they will need to know about riding on the float. If these forms could be returned to school before Friday 2nd December we will have an idea of how many students we can expect to have. Alternativity parents can ring the school to let us know if your child wishes to travel on our float with us.

The Tuakau Christmas parade will take place on Sat December 3rd.

Students travelling on the Onewhero Area School Float, will need to meet at the ITM truck, which will be parked in St Stephens Avenue at 1pm.

The Parade will begin at 2pm.

Franklin Zone Athletics

Well done to the 14 students who competed at the Franklin Zone Athletics on the postponement day due to heavy rain, which also happened to fall on our Teacher Only Day. Due to this, there were a high number of parents who were able to attend this year and support their children in this event. All the students competed to the best of their ability and displayed the school values both on and off the field.

Library Books

if you have any school library books at home please return these Thursday so we can begin our library stock take.

Leavers 2022

Any students leaving OAS at the end of this year other than year 13 would you kindly send a message to the office to assist us with placements for 2023. Please email office@onewhero.school.nz stating name of child and where they are moving onto if known.

School Lockers

Please ask your child to remove their possessions from the locker they have hired for the year, by the end of the term, being 8/12/22. Any personal locks left on lockers after this date will be removed by cutting off and possessions held in the office.

School Pool Key For Sale

The pool keys will be on sale Saturday 10th December 9-11am at the front of the school pool. The cost is $80 on the day by either cash or bank transfer. Please supply your proof of address on the day.

Thank You For Your Donation

The Music department would like to thank Matt Gubb for his generous donation of two guitars, one acoustic and one bass electric, for our students to use. The electric bass is a beautiful and easy bass to play, both guitars belonged to his son who went to our school a few years ago now. Once again, thank you so much for your donation, Matt.

TUAKAU CHRISTMAS PARADE : 3rd December 2022

Decorated Bikes and Decorated Scooters - Free Entry

This is for children up to 10 years of age.

They are in two separated categories; bikes or scooters with a 1st, 2nd, 3rd in each and will receive a certificate and generous prize money and the balance of entries will also get a certificate and a prize.

Each entry will decorate their bike or scooter and also dress up in what they wish ie. Spiderman, Batman, a fairy, or any other that you wish.

The entries will be judged on the total concept of each entry. They will gather and be judged on the lawn at the corner of Madill St and St Stephens Ave.at 1.30pm and then will join the parade at 2.00pm with the floats.

This will be great opportunity for them to become involved and be part of the Parade.

Outdoor Opportunity for Girls & Boys aged 14 & 15 years old

Tuakau District Sea Scouts have a well-deserved reputation for providing fun activities outdoors for our young people / rangatahi. While with us, youth learn amazing life-skills and meet lots of other like-minded young people from all over the region and the country.

We have a long list of ex-Venturers who are out in the world doing great things and contributing to their communities. They have all found that Scouting looks great on their CV's and provides glowing references.

Venturers meet on Thursday evenings during term time and there are often weekend activities that take them all over the place.

We respect that these are busy years at school and we try to help our young people learn work-life balance.

Auckland Regional Dental Service:

Warm greetings to our community

We are delighted that after two and a half years of significant service interruptions, the Covid-19 Protection Framework has now been removed.

Whilst we transition through this new period, we would like to thank our communities for their ongoing support and patience.

The removal of the Protection Framework will usher in a new sense of ‘normality’ for dental services with Covid-19 pre-screening no longer required prior to an appointment. We do however, still require medical masks to be worn in our clinics by children over the age of 12 years and their parent/caregiver. Masks will be provided in our clinics.

The impact of the Covid-19 restrictions throughout the pandemic period has created delays in children accessing routine dental care on time. ARDS is committed to working through a recovery plan and has opened additional Saturday clinics to support access. Alongside this, a priority booking model is being used to offer dental appointments firstly for:

Children where dental treatment has been identified

Children who may be experiencing pain

Those children who have been waiting the longest for an examination

Children who are identified as having a higher dental risk

If, however your child is in pain or you have any concerns about your child’s teeth, please phone 0800 TALK TEETH (0800 825 583) to speak with one of our staff. Our staff will be able to assist with your queries and work with you to establish an appropriate timeframe for your child to be seen.

If you phone outside our normal operating hours of Monday-Friday, 8am-4.30pm, please contact your after-hours GP or Healthline on 0800 611 116. Alternatively, please contact your nearest dentist to ask if they are contracted to offer free emergency after hours care for children.

As we work through this recovery plan, we ask that you please continue to be considerate with our staff who are doing their utmost to ensure dental care is provided to children identified with the highest needs first.

The Centre was initially operating on a standard Probationary Licence as a newly re-opened Centre, but in November 2022 easily passed its Ministry of Education Full Licencing Review. Enrolments have continued to grow steadily and the Centre is now fully staffed and bustling.
