Team Hedgcoxe is Winning for Kids through Regular School Attendance!
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Join Team Hedgcoxe in Winning for Kids through Regular School Attendance!
I hope this letter finds you well and enjoying a restful summer break. As we prepare for the upcoming school year at Hedgcoxe Elementary, I am reaching out to you with an important message about the significance of regular school attendance and our collective attendance goal for the academic year.
At Hedgcoxe, we are committed to providing your child with the best possible educational experience. One crucial factor that contributes to their success is consistent attendance. Research consistently shows that students who attend school regularly are more likely to achieve academically and develop essential life skills.
Therefore, I am excited to announce our school's attendance goal for this academic year under the theme "Team Plano ISD Winning for Kids." Our goal is to achieve a school-wide attendance rate of 96%. Achieving this goal will not only enhance the learning environment for all students but also foster a sense of commitment and responsibility among our school community.
Your support in ensuring your child attends school regularly and arrives on time each day is invaluable. By working together as a teamโteachers, parents, and studentsโwe can create an environment where every child thrives academically and socially.
Here are a few ways you can help us achieve our attendance goal:
1. **Establish a routine:** Set regular bedtimes and morning routines to help your child start the day right.
2. **Communicate:** Inform the school promptly of any absences and discuss with your child the importance of attending school every day.
3. **Promote a positive attitude:** Encourage your child to view school as a place of learning, growth, and opportunity.
4. **Celebrate achievements:** Recognize and celebrate your child's attendance milestones to reinforce the importance of regular attendance.
As we embark on this new school year, I am confident that together, we can achieve great things for our students. Your partnership and involvement are essential to the success of our school community.
Thank you for your continued support of Hedgcoxe and for entrusting us with your child's education. I look forward to a rewarding and successful school year ahead. To help you with planning for the school year, here is a quick link to the Plano ISD 2024-2025 Academic Calendar.

Important Attendance Guidance
Scheduling an Extended Absence or Trip
Plano ISD Extended Unexcused Absence Family Travel Notification Form
Please Review and Complete the Plano ISD Extended Unexcused Absence Family Travel Notification Form to support with planned absences.
Parents sometimes find it necessary to take their children out of school due to family travel that cannot be arranged during times when school is not in progress. When a parent removes his/her child from school for the purpose of family travel, the absence falls outside of the Texas Education Code definition of excused and, therefore, is considered unexcused. Students, parents and guardians could be referred to truancy court upon (10) unexcused absences.
Parents should be alerted to the Minimum Attendance for class credit (25.092 Texas Education Code), which states that a student must be in attendance 90% of the days a class is offered in order to receive credit. If a combination of excused and unexcused absences results in less than 90% attendance, the law requires that the school district convene an attendance committee to consider under what, if any, conditions, if any credit may be granted.
When a student is absent from school, that child loses the benefit of direct instructional time with his/her teacher. This time is highly valued by the PISD community of learners. It is the desire of Plano ISD educators and leaders to have students involved in the learning process every day.
When parents find it necessary to remove their child from school for the purpose of a family trip, the principal should be given advance notice of at least (5) days in order to ensure that the studentโs classroom teachers are notified. Once this form is received by the campus principal, a conference will be scheduled to develop an Attendance Intervention Plan prior to the studentโs departure. Parents are strongly discouraged from taking a student from class unless it is absolutely necessary. If a student is out of school for (10) days or more, the family may be referred to the Plano Attendance Review Board upon return.
It is the studentโs responsibility to make appropriate arrangements with his/her teacher(s) for the completion of pending work and make-up work for missed assignments upon return. Should you have any additional questions, please contact your childโs campus.

Hedgcoxe FAQ
Do parents have a chance to go to Hedgcoxe and discuss the overall wellness of the campus?
Yes! Did you know that the campus hosts Coffee with the Principals and PTA President multiple times throughout the year. These events are a great way to hear about the amazing things happening at Hedgcoxe and to have the opportunity to ask questions.
Does the campus have services or programs after school hours?
Yes. The campus has multiple programs that are put on after school hours in conjunction with our PTA (Art, Coding, Robotics, Choir) based on a studentโs grade level. In addition to these opportunities, the district has an after school care program (PASAR) which is housed at Hedgcoxe. Please note, PASAR is a district program, not a campus run program. To find more information on PASAR, please go to https://www.pisd.edu/pasar .
Do I need to do anything if my child misses school?
Yes. Please alert the campus early in the morning that your child is not attending school. This is a safety measure to make sure our students are accounted for by calling the campus Child Safe Line. It is important to write a note explaining the illness so the campus has the opportunity to excuse the absence. A student has 3 days from when they return to bring a note to the front office.
