Project Optimism Mentoring Sessions (POMS) is a program aims to improve social-emotional and behavioral skills, promote school connectedness, and improve academic performance.
POMS is designed to improve accessibility to positive role models by aligning students with college aged mentors who are reflective of their demographics for an entire academic school year. Participants will attend after school sessions that will focus on the 40 Developmental Assets (Search Institute, 2015), which outline internal and external assets that are essential to youth becoming well-rounded, well-adjusted human beings. Topics covered include: Positive Identity, Empowerment, Commitment to Learning, Goal Setting and more.
Project Optimism is back!
Hello Woodside K-8th!
Thank you for allowing us to drop into classes to inform the students on who we are. We’re thrilled to announce that after a brief break, our program is making a grand return! Mark your calendars because we will be starting our after school mentorship program October 3rd! 🎉
This upcoming week you can expect to see us on campus. Project Optimism will be at the school on September 19th to start our lunch engagement. Lunch engagement will be for all students and the goal is to foster optimism and create a sense of belonging through fun activities.
Stay tuned and thank you for being a valued member of our partnership! If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to me (Program Coordinator)! Thank you again!
We Can Do It Together! - Aerospace Museum Girls Field Trip: 4th-8th, Wed. Sept. 25, 8:15am-1:45pm
We're thrilled to announce that your school site is one of the 21 San Juan Unified school sites selected to participate in an amazing opportunity to partner with the Aerospace Museum of California for their upcoming annual event called “We Can Do It – Together.” This is a one-day event on Wednesday, September 25th from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm designed to inspire students who identify as girls to pursue STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math). The museum aims to provide girls with engaging, hands-on STEAM experiences to encourage and connect them with role models and career opportunities. With only 27% of women currently in the STEAM workforce, we believe this event can amplify, inspire, and leverage our talents to create an inclusive and inspiring environment for young girls across the Sacramento region. Our classroom teachers have chosen 25 students to attend. Permission slips have been sent home with each student.
Middle School Cross Country
Interested middle school students should have received, filled out, and returned the permission slips. Practice starts on Sept. 16th! Practices will be Monday-Wednesday from 2:30-3:15 and meets will be on Thursdays with the first one being on Sept 26. Meets start at 3:30 and go until 5:30 or 6ish (just depends on how many runners are participating in the event) and take place at middle schools near us (Carnegie, Pasteur, Orangevale).
