MS 50 Updates: Week of November 18, 2024

Debate Tournament Saturday!

Our first Saturday debate tournament of the year is coming up this week Saturday, November 23! We will meet at MS 50 at 7AM to take busses to IS 220. This fall, our students are debating the resolution: Should the United States Government abolish cash bail? Ask your debater what evidence they have learned about this interesting topic! Debate families, please sign the permission slip that was shared on Operoo last week.


Want to join us on debate day? Volunteering to judge is a great way to learn more about debate and see young people from across the city engage with each other in a unique, exciting format. You will be trained prior to your first debate and a catered lunch and breakfast is provided. Interested in helping? Sign up at ms50.org/judge.

High School Fair Wednesday

MS 50 is hosting a high school fair this Wednesday for our 8th grade students! This is a great chance for our students to meet with students and staff from more than 20 high schools from across the city. The fair is from 9AM-10:30AM in the cafeteria and interested parents are invited to join. 8th graders should "Dress for Success" to put their best foot forward when meeting with these schools!

Spirit Week Next Week

Next week is our first Spirit Week of the school year! Students are invited to dress up for the following days:


  • Monday, November 25: Zoom Day (wear business on the top, pajamas or lounge clothes on the bottom)
  • Tuesday, November 26: Favorite Color Day
  • Wednesday, November 27: Sports Day

Turkey Bowl Next Wednesday

To celebrate the day before Thanksgiving Break our 8th grade students will face off against the teachers in our annual Turkey Bowl! The touch football game at McCarren Park is a decades-long tradition which we can't wait to continue this year. 8th graders will walk to McCarren Park after lunch and the game will take place during 8th period and after school. All ELTs will be cancelled next week Wednesday for the game.

Classroom Spotlight: Math

6th Grade- Introducing Ratios

In this unit, students learn to understand and use the terms “ratio,” “rate,” “equivalent ratios,” “per,” “at this rate,” “constant speed,” and “constant rate,” and to recognize when two ratios are or are not equivalent. They represent ratios as expressions, and represent equivalent ratios with double number line diagrams, tape diagrams, and tables. They use these terms and representations in reasoning about situations involving color mixtures, recipes, unit pricing, and constant speed.

7th Grade- Measuring Circles

In this unit, students will explore the concept of a circle as a shape made up of all points that are the same distance from a central point, called the center. They will learn why the circumference (the distance around the circle) is always proportional to its diameter, with a constant ratio represented by the number pi. Students will also discover how the area of a circle can be calculated using the formula pi times the square of its radius. Throughout the unit, they will practice using these relationships to find the circumference, radius, diameter, and area of circles, either expressing their answers in terms of pi or using approximate numerical values for pi.

8th Grade- Algebra

In this unit, students learn to understand and use the term “dilation,” and to recognize that a dilation is determined by a point called the “center” and a number called the “scale factor.” They learn that under a dilation, the image of a circle is a circle and the image of a line is a line parallel to the original. They draw images of figures under dilations on and off the coordinate plane. They use the terms “corresponding sides” and “corresponding angles” to describe correspondences between a figure and its dilated image, and recognizing that angle measures are preserved, but lengths are multiplied by the scale factor. They learn to understand similarity of plane figures in terms of rigid transformations and dilations. They learn to recognize when one plane figure is similar or not similar to another. They use the definition of “similar” and properties of similar figures to justify claims of similarity or non-similarity. Students learn the terms “slope” and “slope triangle,” and use the similarity of slope triangles on the same line to understand that any two distinct points on a line determine the same slope.
