Touchdown Learning
In preparation for the Super Bowl, the kindergarten students in Mrs. Ballard’s class had a sports-themed week! All math and literacy centers were centered around different sports- football, hockey, baseball, and MORE!
Students dressed up in jerseys and hats to get the whole experience.
Each day, the kids read books about different sports and then practice using reading skills to compare and contrast, sort information, and write about their favorite sports!
Our centers had students playing tabletop hockey to add and subtract, reading and writing sight words with footballs, practicing counting skills with soccer balls, and playing interactive games on technology!
At the end of the week, the class made sports crafts and even predictions about who would win the Super Bowl!
For the 8th year in a row, the students guessed correctly, predicting the Kansas City Chiefs would be the winners!
Time
3rd-grade students in Mrs. Hebert’s class worked diligently on learning elapsed time during their small group instruction.
Identifying and Analyzing Archetypes
8th-grade students in Mr. Donnelly's, Mrs. Griner's, Mrs. Harter's, and Mrs. Spry's ELA classes at Callahan Middle School practiced identifying and analyzing archetypes by participating in a gallery walk. Students identified the characteristics and examples of characters, settings/situations, and symbol archetypes and recorded them on posters around the room. At the teacher's table, they participated in a "headband" type game where they had to give clues and examples so that their partner could correctly identify the archetype.
Field Trip to Antarctica
After learning about Antarctic animals, the Kindergarten students from YPS visited Antarctica. They experimented with how penguins used blubber to stay warm in the icy water and took killer whales and leopard seals for a swim. They also built Antarctic animal puzzles and igloos. The highlight of their visit was making and playing with snow!

How Planes Fly
Mrs. Russell’s 5th-grade science classes had special guests in my room from the Friends of Fernandina Aviation group presenting the How Planes Fly demonstration with Force and Motion.
