Going the Extra Mile
Congratulations to Mrs. Morgan and Mrs. Yedlick, recipients of the Going The Extra Mile Award!
On February 25th, Mrs. Morgan and Mrs. Yedlick (reading intervention teachers) were honored with the Going the Extra Mile Award. Mrs. Morgan and Mrs. Yedlick can be seen daily supporting so many of our students in the building. Whether it's a smile and good morning at arrival and breakfast or working with students to support their reading, there's nothing they won't do if it's best for kids. We are grateful for their hard work to make Northrop a better place!
16th Annual Talent Show
With over 60 acts and more than 150 students participating, our 16th annual Talent Show was "Wicked" good fun! A few highlights are below and once the full performance recording is completed, I will share the link with all of you to enjoy at home!
5th grade Capstone Projects
Early February, our 5th grade students welcomed in members of the community as part of their capstone project work. Students were connected with a community member with a career that is of interest to them. They prepared interview questions, greeted them with eye contact and a handshake, and are working to help the community member solve a real world problem they encounter in their jobs. This work is a direct connection to our Portrait of a Bee as students work to become collaborators, responsible decision makers, and innovative problem solvers.
Spring Pictures - March 13th
Spring pictures will be held on March 13th. Only students who are purchasing pictures will have their photo taken. Please let your student's teacher know if you would like your student to have their picture taken this day.
Social Emotional Learning
As part of our work to support students with their social and emotional development, we teach lessons daily that cover a variety of skills. These lessons give students words to describe their feelings and strategies to use when they're feeling upset. Not only does it help the individual students when needed, but it also builds the classroom community and helps everyone understand how to handle things when they don't go as expected.
During the month of February, students reviewed expected and unexpected behaviors, hidden rules, flexible and stuck thinking, and began learning about conflict management. Ask your student about these concepts!

I am at Northrop on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays each week.
As an elementary school counselor, I am committed to supporting the social and emotional needs of our students and the families of the students we serve. In addition, I am also committed to supporting our staff here at school to ensure that we are meeting the individual needs of each student during the school day. By addressing social and emotional needs as well as academics, we work together to increase learning and academic growth for each student here at Eliza Northrop and Waite Elementary Schools. As a school counselor, my typical services include small groups and/or individual meetings with students, as well as in the whole group, which is often in a classroom setting. I teach students new skills that can assist them with positive and appropriate emotional expression as well as in learning coping skills and the use of coping tools.

Helping Hands Preschool Peer Registration Now Open!
NEW Peer Registration opens on January 31, 2025 for the 2025-2026 school year.
A peer model is a role model student, aged three to five, who demonstrates age-appropriate language, behavior, and social skills, and does not have special needs. Peers need to be toilet-trained by their first day of preschool.
The first step of the process is to complete and return a peer model application. All peer applications for the 2025-2026 school year will be completed electronically. After we receive the application, all applications will be reviewed and a Peer Screening may be scheduled. Registration will take place until all openings are filled.
In March, you will receive a notification letter on whether your child has been accepted into the Helping Hands Preschool or has been placed on a wait list. Upon receiving the Acceptance letter, you will need to register your student in the Medina City Schools system within 30 days. Instructions for registration will accompany your notification of acceptance letter.
To apply to be a peer, please click here to fill out our application.
If you have any questions, please visit our website or call the Preschool at (330) 636-4400.

COVID FAQs
Do kids have to stay home if someone in the family has COVID?
In general kids can come to school as long as they are feeling well unless they have tested positive for COVID.
If a student tests positive for COVID, they have to stay home for at least 24 hours or until their symptoms are getting better overall AND they have been fever-free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication.
Are masks required after testing positive?
No, they are recommended and encouraged. More information can be found here.
