We hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and enjoyed celebrating this season of giving and gratitude.
As we move into the second marking period, we encourage you to stay engaged with your child’s academic journey. If you were unable to attend the recent parent-teacher conferences, please don’t hesitate to contact us to schedule a more convenient time to meet. Your child’s academic progress is important to us, and we want to ensure you remain well-informed and involved.

Spirit Week
We’re excited to announce Holiday Spirit Week, happening from December 16-20! Let’s get into the holiday spirit together with fun activities and themes throughout the week.

Important Reminders
We want your child to have a productive and great experience at Edmund W. Miles Middle School. Please remind your child of the following policies:
- Attendance
- Be on time- school day 7:10 am-2:10 pm
- Prepared for learning with materials and a charged Chromebook
- Follow Cell Phone Policy
- Follow Head Gear and Dress Code Policy
- Reach out to your child's teacher(s) with academic concerns
- Extra Help is Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday
Strategies for Middle Schoolers
1. Understand the Transition to Middle School
- Recognize the increased responsibilities and academic expectations.
2. Encourage Independence
- Help your child develop self-management skills, such as using a planner for assignments.
- Gradually allow them to solve problems and make decisions on their own.
3. Stay Involved
- Regularly check their grades and assignments through the school’s Parent Portal.
- Attend parent-teacher conferences and school events to stay connected.
- Communicate with teachers with your educational concerns.
4. Establish a Homework Routine
- Create a consistent time and quiet space for studying.
- Encourage starting on assignments early to avoid last-minute stress.
- Most assignment are posted on Google Classroom.
5. Support Social Development
- Talk openly about friendships, peer pressure, and social media.
- Limit time on social media and video games.
- Encourage involvement in clubs, sports, or activities that interest them to build positive relationships.
6. Communication
- Ask specific questions about their day, such as, “What was the most interesting thing you learned?” instead of “How was school?”
- Be approachable so they feel comfortable sharing challenges and successes.
- If you have questions or concerns about grades, contact their teacher(s).
7. Teach Organization Skills
- Help them organize their backpacks, binders, and digital files weekly.
- Show them how to prioritize tasks and break down large projects into manageable steps.
8. Monitor Technology Use
- Set clear rules for screen time, social media, and gaming.
- Encourage balance by promoting offline activities and family time.
- While in school the policy is off and away.
9. Focus on Emotional Well-Being
- Acknowledge and validate their feelings as they face new challenges.
- Teach healthy coping strategies for stress, such as deep breathing or journaling.
10. Promote a Growth Mindset
- Celebrate effort and resilience rather than just grades.
- Encourage them to view challenges as opportunities to grow and learn.
11. Encourage Reading
- Provide access to books, articles, and materials that interest them.
- Support curiosity and creative pursuits outside the classroom.
- Encourage independent reading for 45-1hour per day.
12. Healthy Habits
- Ensure they get adequate sleep, exercise, and a balanced diet.
- Teach the importance of time management to balance academics and personal life.
