Cougar Weekly
August 31 through September 4
It's our second first day of school in less than a month!
Here are some reminders for tomorrow:
- Wear your new Cougar Paw t-shirt with slacks (white, khaki, black). This way our students and parents will recognize us all as staff, especially at morning drop-off and at dismissal.
- Please ask your parents tomorrow (in an email or other message) to send a water bottle with their child this week. Mention the new water bottle filling stations (we have two), and that water fountains will only be used to fill water bottles until further notice. Admin will walk around in the morning and give each student a water bottle to use for the week; it's only a plastic one, until the district's come in (they are ordered and will be here by end of week).
- At dismissal, make sure to bring your list of WHO can pick up each student at parent pick-up. Sylvia will print registration cards, if she has not already done so, and you can use these to make your list if you have not already heard from parents. Remember to try and keep students as spread out as possible - in the cool hallway, maybe, and then call them to you as you talk to each parent. admin will be there to help pre-K and Kinder.
- Although we will certainly prioritize the F2F learner tomorrow, since there is A LOT that goes along with that, don't forget our virtual students. Some of you are continuing to allow them into your daily circles, and some of you may be opening a zoom at the end of the day for those that have questions. I think there will be more to come on this... although we do not have to do synchronous teaching, we may have to find ways to incorporate them into check-ins and circles. More to come; not something to worry about right now. Just plan to check-in with them tomorrow (at the end of the day, even) with an email or message of encouragement.

A few FAQs (many were answered at our Teacher meeting after school Friday:
- Can students drink from water fountains? Not at this time. Please ask parents to send a water bottle with their student. We will hand out one per student tomorrow, but it is not intended to last multiple days. There are two new water filling stations on our campus.
- When do we go to recess? When you can do so safely (it's too hot for lunch recess this week). Students must wash hands when returning from recess.
- is there a restroom schedule? Not at this time. PK-1 should use restrooms in their classrooms. 2nd-5th graders will take restroom breaks one class at a time.
- Can students go to the restroom by themselves? Yes, as needed.
- Lunch numbers? We will use cards that were copied and organized Friday for both breakfast and lunch. Students will be given these cards and they will be taken up when they get their tray or grab-n-go breakfast.
- Do students wear masks at PE and Recess? At this time, yes. Students may play on recess equipment and must be spaced out. Please be mindful of the heat this week.
- Are snacks allowed? Students can bring their own snacks for themselves only at this time. Hopefully this will be amended soon.
- Can students use common centers? Yes, but utilize hand sanitizer or hand washing before and after learning centers
- Will students who checked out technology bring it to school? Hopefully. It is a parent choice as they are responsible for the device. If they bring it, keep it in one spot, maybe with a sticky note with student name, so you can account for it visually. Phones may not be used during class time. Cell phones are to be powered off and remain in backpacks.
Is the district changing the CUA calendar? We cannot adjust the pacing calendar. For the first few CUAs, please ensure teachers use those formatively (to adjust instruction), give grace, and do not assign grades.
Attendance Procedures: Students who arrive in-person on Monday should be marked present. Everyone else should be marked absent. The LMS should capture remaining students. For your awareness, attendance calls will begin on Tuesday for In-Person and Virtual learners (the following day). See attached TAC information.
- Can parents send cupcakes for student birthdays? Lauren’s Law: Advise parents to be extra cautious during COVID times of the spread of germs and to please be mindful of other students health and safety when choosing food to share on a child’s birthday (i.e. individually packaged items, individually portioned items, etc.). Make sure teachers are cautious about how the items are served – teacher passes out the treat instead of students.
