At Home Phonics Practice
Phonics is an important method for teaching reading and spelling by focusing on the relationship between letters (or symbols) and their corresponding sounds. It helps children decode (read) and encode (spell) words by understanding how sounds are represented by letters or groups of letters.
Tips for At Home Practice:
Families can easily practice phonics skills anywhere—during car rides or while shopping. By pointing out and sounding out words on signs, labels, or products, children can apply their phonics knowledge to real-world examples. This also helps children recognize patterns in words, which is useful for both spelling and reading.
By practicing these skills in daily routines and using the videos and word lists provided, children can develop strong phonics skills that support both reading and writing.
We are excited to kick off AVID recruitment!
This week, our 5th graders learned about the AVID program that will be offered next year at AMS. The AVID elective class creates a culture where college is possible for all students, focusing on empowering them with important life and academic skills.
To learn more about the elective class, application process, and interviews, please attend our meeting on January 27 at 6:00 PM. It will be held at Algonquin Lakes Middle School.
Please reach out to lisa.vehrs@d300.org or bonnie.cyrwus@d300.org with any questions.
