October Wrangler Round Up!
George Welch Parent Newsletter
Message from Ms. Wood, Principal
Hello Parents and Happy October! This is the time of year life seems to move at hyper speed with holidays, activities, and so much more! In October we have the Book Fair and Grandparents' Day, Saddling Up for Success Meetings, Fall Break, and Red Ribbon Week!
The nine weeks is quickly coming to a close; the end of the grading period is Thursday, October 10. Report cards will be sent home following Fall Break. We are hosting Saddling up for Success Meetings next week to help you support your child at home. Thank you to all who have completed the survey. This information will help us tailor our meetings to target what you want to know. Also, please feel free to contact your child's teacher if you have questions or concerns.
So often we are asked, "How can I help my child at home?" One of the best predictors for academic success begins with reading at home. Reading to your child at an early age not only builds focus, language skills, and critical thinking skills, but reading aloud to your child builds a bond between parent and child and ignites creativity and imagination while also building logical thinking!
Usually the response is, "My child doesn't like to read." That is not uncommon, so we have to get creative in what we offer them to read. Comic books, graphic novels, hobby magazines, blogs (parent-approved and appropriate), etc. If your child doesn't like to read, ask them why. It may be that they haven't found a book or series that interests them. I will never forget when I discovered Ramona Quimby, Age 8! I fell in love with reading; anything Beverly Cleary wrote, I read! (And I just dated myself! LOL!) Mrs. Green, our librarian, can recommend some books and titles that might peak your child's interest. Reading is an active process and lights up the brain. As children become stronger readers, academic achievement increases across the curricula!
Life is busy, but we only get one chance to make an impact on the lives of our children! It's never too late to build a love of reading! You might find you enjoy it too!

Energy Bus Stop!
We believe in building a positive culture at George Welch! To help us teach important principals of a positive mindset, we became a Certified Energy Bus School! This program is based on Jon Gordon's international best-seller The Energy Bus! It became so popular in schools that he wrote a children's book and along with Dr. Jim van Allen created the Energy Bus program for schools and co-wrote The Energy Bus for Schools, that features a passage from our very own assistant principal, Mrs. Anna Redding!
Our students have completed the overview of the program and are working on learning about the first rule, Create a Positive Vision. Students learn that they are the driver of their bus/life and their choices and actions determine where it goes; having a vision provides a positive outlook and goal to strive for; our visions and goals evolve over time; difference between short term and long term goals; and how creating a positive vision and believing in it creates positive outcomes.
This program focuses on having a positive mindset, learning to persevere during difficult times, enjoying life with the people you surround yourself with, making choices that make a positive impact on yourself and others, and not allowing bullies to steal your joy!
Each month we also focus on a word. Classes select a student who best represents the word; this is the Wrangler Way Award. In September, we focused on the word DETERMINED, which means setting a goal or having a plan and working to achieve the goal or plan even when it is difficult; staying focused on your goal and not giving up! In October, we will learn about being RESPONSIBLE.
Ask your child about what it means to have a positive vision or set a goal and our words of the month!
