Superintendent's Message
Violet Nichols
June 6, 2024
Dear Parents/Guardians and Staff,
As this time of the school year inevitably comes around I always feel a bit blue. Our students and staff give life to all that we do and with graduation about a week away, I am realizing that it will be much quieter around here very soon! And then I remember that it is simply bittersweet because we have so many wonderful celebrations coming up to acknowledge our students’ accomplishments. I will look forward to seeing so many of you in the upcoming week to relish celebrations together!
Speaking of summer, I’d like to share information about Summer Resources. As school comes to a close, we have gathered summer resources in one location on our website, including Summer EBT, Summer Meals Program (info coming soon!), School’s Out, and fall sports registration. Find those here.
Legislative Update
At last night’s board meeting, South Burlington legislators spoke about the bills they are working on and the impacts they will have on education and education funding. You can watch that here. (Starts at 54:00)
The yield bill they discussed last night was vetoed by the governor today. If it had passed, our tax rate would have been $1.4598, which would have been a 8.18% increase (down from 8.8% at the time of the approved budget vote).
Thank you to Senators Ginny Lyons and Tom Chittenden and Representatives Emilie Krasnow, Brian Minier, Martin LaLonde, Kate Nugent and Noah Hyman for coming and partnering with us as we navigate the road ahead. I am grateful to partner with our State Senators and appreciate their support of our schools.
Panorama Surveys
Thank you to all those who participated in the Family-School Relationship Survey that we just conducted. Families responded to questions in three categories: Barriers to Engagement, School Climate and School Fit. There were 282 responses of 2,600 families. Below are some of the highlights, next steps, and connections to ongoing Continuous Improvement Planning in the District and at each school.
Barriers to Engagement: 76% positive
Strengths: Parents’/guardians’ negative memories from their school experience not impacting their involvement in their child's school
Opportunities for growth: Parents’/guardians’ busy schedules impacting engagement
Actions steps: Offer engagement opportunities at a variety of times to increase engagement (Continuous Improvement Goal 2: Safe and Healthy Schools)
School Climate: 65% positive
Strengths: Teachers respect students
Opportunities for growth: Increasing motivation in lessons at school
Actions steps: Increase engagement in academics through improving instruction and instructional delivery; implementing new math and literacy programs and developing Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (Continuous Improvement Goal 3: Academic Proficiency)
School Fit: 60% positive
Strengths: Students feel a sense of belonging at their schools
Opportunities for growth: Activities that match students’ interests
Actions steps: Work with administrators to ensure there are more opportunities to engage all students (Continuous Improvement Goal 1: Social, Emotional Learning)
Meet new Rick Marcotte Assistant Principal Matthew Currier!
Principal McDonald previously announced Mr. Currier’s new role in her newsletter, but at the school board meeting last night, his hiring was approved so I am happy to announce it here! Currier is currently a 4th-grade teacher at Rick Marcotte and has been an emerging leader in PreK-12 in our district. He's a leader on the RMCS Crisis Team, an EST coordinator, a coach, and the SBHS Summer School Director. His first day will be July 1st. Congratulations Matt!
Transportation Update
Past transportation information can be found on the Transportation Services website under Transportation Updates.
This week we welcomed Jean-Marie Clark as our new Operations Director. Transportation has moved from Tim Jarvis’s purview to Jean-Marie’s. She can be reached at jclark@sbschools.net. Welcome Jean-Marie!
At the June 3 meeting, South Burlington City Council voted to approve a resolution establishing a Safe Routes to School Task Force, jointly led by members representing South Burlington's City and School District. The task force will continue to be facilitated by Local Motion. The primary tasks of the task force will be to identify safe routes to all South Burlington schools, and related needs (e.g., infrastructure, crossing guard, etc.) to ensure that paths are safe and welcoming for students and their families; and to develop and support school-based safe routes to school teams to build a school culture of walking, biking and rolling to school.
The City Council also voted to support a demonstration project to test a neighborhood greenway concept for safe walking and biking to school. The vision is to create a comfortable low stress Neighborhood to Schools Greenway connecting the intersection of Rt 2 and Elsom Parkway to the middle/high school campus by way of mostly residential streets. Local Motion will work with the Task Force to design and install the greenway. This project is targeted for construction in late summer/early fall 2024. Funding for this project is provided by Local Motion, through a grant from the Chittenden County Regional Transportation Commission.
I’d like to thank the council, City Manager Baker, former School Board member Kate Bailey, Susan Grasso of Local Motion, AP Chris Shackett and all those who are supporting this work. I want to share a HUGE thank you to Local Motion for financially supporting the greenway project! I am deeply grateful for our community partnerships.
