Tips for a productive parent-teacher conference
Fall conferences will be held in the evening on Thursday, October 10, and during the day on Friday, October 11. Conferences are a great opportunity to learn more about your child’s experiences at school and how you can help at home. If you are looking for ideas on preparing for conferences or sample questions to ask, Colorín Colorado has created some helpful guides. English Español ردو हिन्दी
If you were not able to sign up for a conference, there is still time! Please contact your child's teacher to schedule.
District will conduct phone test at 8:30 a.m. Friday, October 11
CCSD 89 will conduct the annual test of the district’s emergency phone contact system at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, October 11. Students will not be in school that day because of conferences. This test is designed to ensure that the district has accurate phone numbers for the families of all students.
On October 11, every guardian should receive a recorded voice message on the phone numbers registered with the district. This is the phone number that would be called in the event of an emergency, such as a weather-related closing. There is no need to respond to the phone message. However, if you do not receive the call by 10 a.m. Friday, October 11, contact your school secretary to ensure that the school has your correct information.
Halloween costume reminders
Some of the students are talking excitedly about selecting their Halloween costumes, so when doing so, please consider what is appropriate for school. We ask that costumes be non-violent and school-appropriate. Costumes should not include swords, guns, knives, clubs, lasers, or any other type of weapon. All costumes and masks must be designed for safety and adequate vision.
Costumes are not worn all day, but Westfield students may change into costumes for the Halloween party and costume parade in the afternoon. There will not be time for make-up or hairspray at school. If possible, costumes should fit over a student’s clothes.
Socktober
Happy October! This year, Student Council is bringing Socktober back again! Each night in the United States, an estimated 600,000 people live on the streets. This October, we want Westfield to show that even a small act of love, such as donating a pair of socks, can make a big difference in the lives of our neighbors who are homeless or in need.
For the remaining days of October, Westfield will be accepting donations of new socks. Each pod will work together to get sock donations. In each pod, you will find a box for collection. The pod with the most pairs of socks will receive a reward. Socks will be donated to DuPage PADS in Wheaton.
Westfield is Celebrating OAKtober!
The Westfield Garden Club is collecting acorns the entire month of October. If your family has access to acorns, please help us celebrate by collecting and donating them to Westfield. The viable acorns will be used to grow and care for new oak trees. Please be sure to only provide acorns from trees that your family owns.
Oaks represent strength and stature and are historically significant to both the Chicago region and Illinois, evident in the fact that the white oak is the Illinois state tree. Majestic oaks create a sense of awe and wonder. These trees work for us by cleaning our air and water, reducing ambient air temperature, and decreasing our use of energy. But oaks need our help: around the world, more than one-third of all oak species are threatened with extinction.
OAKtober is a time to celebrate oaks and everything that they do for people, as well as to promote the planting and care of these important trees. Every individual, organization, community, park district, forest preserve, and public or private landowner or manager can play an important role in celebrating oaks and oak ecosystems across Illinois throughout the month of October.
Please bring acorns in a bag to Mr. Mennecke in the LMC. If you have any questions, please email Mr. Mennecke at kmennecke@ccsd89.org
Please donate acorns to Westfield in a bag and make sure you own the tree or you have permission to take the acorns.
Birthday Bag Drive
Some of our students' Girl Scout Troop is collecting items to create birthday bags for the Glen House Food Pantry. From October 7-18, you can donate items at Westfield to support this project.
