Flex Groups: A Forest North Instructional Model
Round Rock Independent School District is committed to providing quality education for every child. At Forest North, we utilize a flex group support model so we can meet the needs of all students— those who need extra assistance with grade-level concepts and those who need enrichment beyond grade level. Here’s some information about this small group instructional model:
Our Kindergarten through 5th-grade teams have 30-minute flex time blocks embedded in their math and literacy schedules to allow for small group work.
Groups are built by teacher teams using a variety of data points. The group membership is usually a combination of students from both of the grade’s classes. It “flexes” or changes as new progress monitoring data is collected and students need different skill work.
Groups are led by homeroom teachers as well as members of our intervention and special education teams. Our librarian, instructional technology specialist and instructional coach also teach groups sometimes. At any time, our students could be served by a teacher outside of their homeroom or grade level, so don’t be surprised if they come home talking about the amazing Mrs. Shetty, Mrs. Bordic, Mrs. Bradley, Mrs. Doran, etc., etc!
We use a wide range of instructional resources to plan these group lessons based on the changing needs of the students. All are intended to supplement and enrich the core curriculum.
All students receive their core instruction– the bulk of their instructional day– with their homeroom teacher experts. We use the flex group model as a supplement to provide targeted, data driven, differentiated instruction for all. Homeroom teachers will share information about the groups your child may be in and his/her beginning of year data at Fall Conference which are coming up next month.
