The Lister Weekly Update #25
Wednesday 26th March

Your Lister News from the Lister News Team
Year 11 Countdown
Another week has gone. This is shown in the picture, which is being shared by English teachers as a way to prompt their students into working harder and longer to get to those final GCSE outcomes. There are lots of intervention sessions available after school and before school for Lister students. Whilst the majority of these sessions are targeted, most teachers will be happy to include volunteer students who want to get on with some extra work. Students will be invited into school during the first week of the Easter holidays for further intervention. If you receive the invitation, please make sure your child attends.
Here is a list of supportive strategies that you can use to help your child:
- Establish a quiet and dedicated study space.
- Minimize distractions during study time.
- Offer encouragement and positive reinforcement.
- Assist in creating a revision timetable.
- Ensure they are taking regular breaks and maintaining a healthy balance.
- Help them prioritize tasks and manage deadlines.
- Emphasize the importance of consistent, short revision sessions rather than last-minute cramming.
- Help them use effective revision techniques (e.g., flashcards, mind maps, practice papers).
- Limit Screen Time:
- Encourage them to limit the time spent on phones and social media.
- Offer to take phones away for periods of solid revision, so that they do not have to resist the urge to use their phones.
- Help them use technology as a revision tool, not a distraction.
Lastly - Celebrate Successes!
- Acknowledge and celebrate their efforts and achievements, no matter how small.
- Reassure them that you are proud of them, regardless of the outcome.
Poetry By Heart: A Celebration of Verse and Voice (with a Lister Winner!)
Sarah Bonnell Community School recently played host to a captivating Poetry By Heart event, a gathering that brought together the vibrant voices of students from across the NCL. We were very pleased at the Lister News Desk to get a front row seat to see the awesome students from across the NCL shining brightly on stage. Perhaps we are slightly biased in thinking that the Lister students were the best! Although, we did see a Lister student, Laiba Haider - shown in the picture to the right - winning first place for her recital, so there's evidence to suggest that our appreciation of Lister students is supported by fact!
The atmosphere was electric as students from various schools took to the stage, each delivering recitations of classic and contemporary poems with passion and skill. The event was a testament to the power of spoken word, showcasing the students' ability to connect with the audience through their nuanced interpretations and powerful delivery. The diverse range of poems chosen reflected the rich tapestry of literary heritage and the students’ individual tastes. From well-loved classics to contemporary works, the performances were a testament to the enduring power of poetry to inspire, challenge, and move.
The event fostered a spirit of friendly competition, but more importantly, it was a celebration of shared appreciation for poetry. Students from different schools mingled, shared their love of language, and encouraged one another.
The presence of guest primary schools added an extra layer of excitement, showcasing the budding talent of young poets and inspiring the older students with their enthusiasm. The event served as a bridge between primary and secondary education, fostering a love for literature that will hopefully continue to grow.
The Poetry By Heart event at Sarah Bonnell was a resounding success, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended. It was a powerful reminder of the importance of poetry in education, and the incredible talent that exists within our schools.
Lister's Alpine Adventure to Claviere, Italy!
The slopes of Claviere, Italy, recently echoed with the sounds of laughter and the swish of skis as a group of Lister students embarked on an unforgettable adventure. Our annual ski trip proved to be a resounding success, offering a week of exhilarating skiing, breathtaking scenery, and the creation of lasting memories.
Nestled in the picturesque Italian Alps, Claviere provided the perfect setting for our students to hone their skiing skills, whether they were seasoned pros or first-time skiers. Under the expert guidance of our instructors, students tackled a variety of slopes, from gentle beginner runs to challenging descents. The sense of accomplishment as they mastered new techniques was palpable.
Beyond the skiing, the trip offered a unique opportunity for students to experience a different culture and environment. They immersed themselves in the stunning alpine landscape, enjoying the crisp mountain air and the panoramic views. Evenings were filled with camaraderie and laughter, as students shared stories and bonded over their shared experiences.
The trip also fostered important life skills, such as teamwork, resilience, and independence. Students learned to support one another, overcome challenges, and adapt to a new environment.
The memories created during this trip will undoubtedly stay with our students for years to come. From conquering challenging slopes to enjoying the warmth of Italian hospitality, the Lister ski trip to Claviere was a truly enriching experience. We’re already looking forward to next year’s adventure!
Online Safety
Kooth have created a helpful video that supports parents in keeping their children safe online. You can watch it here. Students watched a similar video aimed at them during form time this week - why not discuss this with them! This leaflet gives further information to parents and carers about online safety.
As the holidays approach, it is extremely important that parents monitor the online activity of their children and ensure they are keeping safe online.
Food Bank Coming up on the 2nd of April!
The School food bank runs before every half term/full term holiday, so all students have access to food over their holidays. Students can come and take what they like, within reason, apart from rice and pasta. The food bank is open to any student who may require it. The next food bank for our students will be on Wednesday 2nd of April, in the training room near the main reception.
This will start at 3:30pm.
* Not all food is halal. Please check for ingredients.
* We cannot cater for allergens, as the food is donated to us and has allergens within the products.
* The food bank is completely run by volunteers, so please be patient with staff.
