Active Threat Drill
Dear North Shore Academy Elementary Families:
The Illinois School Safety Drill Act requires the school to conduct at least one law enforcement lockdown drill within the first 90 days of every academic year to address an active threat or an active shooter within a school building. The drill is intended to evaluate the preparedness of school personnel and students for situations calling for the involvement of law enforcement when there is an active threat or an active shooter within the school building. As required by law, please be assured that the lockdown drill:
Does not include any simulations that mimic an actual shooting incident or active shooter event;
Is announced in advance to all school personnel and students prior to the commencement of the drill;
Includes content that is age- and developmentally-appropriate;
Includes trauma-informed approaches to address the concerns and well-being of school personnel; and
Permits students to ask questions related to it.
This year’s lockdown drill will take place on Wednesday, January 24, 2024 and will include a walk-through component. All parents are permitted to exempt their child from participating in the lockdown drill for any reason. In the event a parent chooses to exempt their child, the District will provide all students alternative safety education and instruction related to an active threat or active shooter event to provide them with essential information, training, and instruction through less sensorial safety training methods than an actual walk-through lockdown drill. If you do not want your child to participate in the upcoming walk-through lockdown drill, please complete the attached Opt-out Request and return it to your child's teacher or email the form back to Dr. CW by Tuesday, January 23, 2024.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Demetrius Hall, TrueNorth’s District Safety and Security Coordinator, at dhall@truenorth804.org or 847-831-5100 Ext 4315, or you can contact Dr. CW as well.
X-Large Cardboard Boxes
Cardboard boxes - x-large in size needed for STEAM project for after break
As this is the season for great deals on large appliances and items, if you remember to keep the boxes, Mr. White would be so grateful. He is preparing for a surprise STEAM project for after the winter break that will require lots and lots and lots of large cardboard boxes. If you happen to have empty large to extremely large boxes laying around, please consider donating them to NSAE for an upcoming STEAM project. Thanks in advance!

The Principal's Pound
Three days of school were jam-packed with opportunities for our students and staff to show their flexibility skills! One of our HVAC systems was not working, so hats, gloves, space heaters, and lots of movement breaks were utilized. The students and staff were troopers and learning did not skip a beat! We welcomed back Mr. Cloh who was out for a while. Additionally, we welcomed Mr. Gomez who will be taking over the Liveris room officially as the teacher. Changing staff in the rooms can always be a little bumpy, and our students and staff rose to the occasion.
I am excited to have a full week coming up, so we can solidify the routines in our building. The temperatures are creeping up slowly, so please continue to stay warm, enjoy life, share smiles, and laugh lots!
As always, please let me know how I can help you as an individual or family, so we can be the best supportive team for your student!
Enjoy your week ahead!
Dr. Jen Cooper-Wells
