Message from Mr. O'Rourke
Dear Hillcat Students Families,
As we approach this season of gratitude, we want to take a moment to reflect on the many blessings that surround us. This year has been filled with challenges and triumphs, but through it all, we have witnessed the strength, resilience, and kindness that define our school community.
We are incredibly grateful for the dedication and hard work of our students, the support and encouragement of our families, and the unwavering commitment of our staff. It is because of all of you that we continue to grow and thrive together.
This Thanksgiving, may you find time to relax, recharge, and enjoy the company of loved ones. We are thankful for each and every one of you, and we look forward to the opportunities and accomplishments that the rest of the year will bring.
Wishing you all a wonderful Thanksgiving.
With gratitude,

HDHS Jiu Jitsu Club
The HDHS Jiu-Jitsu club is having a great year. We had roughly a dozen students begin training at the start of this school year. We continue to add new members. The students training here are rapidly improving in their skill in and knowledge of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Newcomers are always welcome. The club has been in operation since 2016. We train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu which is an art that emphasizes using leverage and position to take down an opponent, pin them, and submit them using strangles and joint locks. Mr. Denslow has been training since 2008 and greatly enjoys sharing his knowledge of this martial art.
If you have questions. Please contact Noah Denslow at ndenslow@hdsd.org.
Greece Trip: Spring 2026!
Greek gods. Mythical landscapes. The Acropolis in Athens. The ancient site of the Oracle of Delphi. The theater of Epidaurus. Agamemnon's Lion Gate of Mycenae. Poseidon's Temple at Cape Sounion. History 4000 years in the making. Experience all of this in April of 2026 during our next international trip, which will take us to Greece!
We’re excited to tell you more about the trips we’re planning with EF Tours, our educational travel partner. There will be an informational session on Monday, November 25, at 6:00 pm for all those interested in learning more about the trip. Please be sure to register for this info session to be considered for this opportunity: https://bit.ly/4hJIdJD
When students travel, they expand their knowledge of the world around them, discover more about themselves, and grow more confident. These skills are critical for creating the global citizens of tomorrow, and we would love to have your student join us on this adventure.
In this info session, we’ll talk about:
- How this opportunity will benefit your student
- What we’ll see and do on our trip
- Everything that’s included in this experience
- How your child can earn academic credit
How we’re keeping this safe and affordable
- How to enroll on this trip (before it fills up!) during EF’s risk-free enrollment period
There are limited spots on this trip, so we would love to have you attend this meeting to learn more about this exciting opportunity!
Thanks,

What's Happening in the Classrooms of HDHS?
Field Trip to the North Country
Students at Hillsboro-Deering High School ended the month of October with a trip to the Conway Scenic Railroad. What a beautiful day to visit the 1890 Victorian train depot in the middle of Conway and then have the chance to explore the trains throughout the year. Our crew even found a steam train from the 1800's that was huge. This trip was a great opportunity to learn about the time of expansion, and the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, as well as to see firsthand how large these trains are and how much fun it was to travel on them.
Environmental Science Field Trip
Our Environmental Science classes visited Squam Lakes Natural Science Center on October 23 in support of our current unit on Biodiversity. While there, students engaged in a lesson about raptors and their place in the New Hampshire food web. Students got to see a Northern Saw Whet Owl, Broad Winged Hawk, and Barred Owl up close in the classroom and ask all sorts of questions about the behaviors of these creatures. We spent the rest of the day walking the exhibit trails - students loved watching the Mountain Lions and the Bald Eagle! We had a fantastic trip and made many memories.
Forensics 1
In Forensics 1, students analyzed details that can be obtained from fiber evidence using microscopic analysis and burning analysis.
Salt Water Tank
Thanks to the dedication and connections of Mr. McGinn, sea creatures have returned to the salt water touch tank in Mrs. Harnois's classroom. Students and staff are excited to have this up close opportunity to observe and interact with these organisms.

Getting Ready for the Craft Fair
The students in the Autism Program and the Life Skills program have been working really hard on creating some items for the upcoming craft fair on the 7th of December. We have been making friendship bracelets, microwave cozies, and some various Christmas decorations for your tree. Some of the skills they are learning by creating these crafts would be; hand eye coordination, following directions, and the skill of making things for others.
The students will also be working at the fair and they will be learning money skills, proper communication with people they don’t know as well as practicing waiting. The money raised from the sales will help them achieve their goals for their community activities. So please come see us at the craft fair December 7, from 10 to 2:00 p.m.
Getting in the Thanksgiving Spirit
Students in assisted study hall are making turkey table decor and cards for the residents at the Hillsboro House Nursing Home this week. The cards are part of their writing curriculum and the turkeys are just a thoughtful activity to do something special for someone else.
All New England Choral and Band Festivals
Kairi Sparrow, Jadelyn Baez, and Faith Daley traveled to Plymouth State University on November 7th to participate in the annual All New England Choral Festival. They spent the day rehearsing with 190 high school choral students and put on a concert that evening. Logan Lane and Liana Swirko will take the stage next at PSU's All New England Band Festival on Monday, November 25th.
Busy Fall for DECA!
Fall Leadership Conference
37 students attended the NH DECA Fall Leadership Conference at UNH on Oct 30. The kids had a great time, formed networks around the state, participated in a mock role-play, and learned more about DECA.
DECA Induction Ceremony
On Tuesday, November 12, 2024, thirty-seven DECA students were officially inducted into the Hillsboro-Deering High School DECA chapter. The induction ceremony occurred in front of a packed cafeteria of family and community members.
