Hastings Boys' High School
Newsletter February 2022 Volume 1
Message from the Headmaster
Kia ora koutou
Welcome to our first newsletter for 2022. Even with the backdrop of Omicron and Covid, it has been a very pleasing start to the school year. The challenges of Covid/Omicron cannot be underestimated but family/whanau and students, be assured our school is fully prepared to meet these challenges with the least disruption to learning as possible.
Well done to last years seniors students who produced very pleasing NCEA results.
NCEA Level 1 : 85.3% HBHS 66.2% National Boys' Mean
NCEA Level 2 : 91.7% HBHS 75.4% National Boys' Mean
NCEA Level 3: 90.0% HBHS 66.1% National Boys' Mean
University Entrance: 55.7% HBHS 44.4% National Boys' Mean
A huge shout out to Alex Eaglestone and Joshua Woodhead (Year 13 last year) who both picked up New Zealand Scholarship passes in Physical Education. and also the other 70 boys achieving excellence and merit endorsements.
Interschool Sport
Covid has placed restrictions on interschool sport. Sport Hawke's Bay along with all regional and national organisations have mandated that all students 12 years and over must be fully vaccinated to take part in interschool sport. We as a school especially value the benefits of sport but this must occur in a safe environment. All students therefore must present their vaccine pass to register to play school sport for Hastings Boys' High School.
We have announced our first group of Prefects, to assist Quaid Crawford for 2022. A number of senior students are close to selection and a further 3-4 will be added to this group at the beginning of term 2. This reminds us that selection of Prefects, House Leaders or Class Leaders starts in Year 9 and we encourage junior students to aim for these positions three to four years from now.
As Headmaster I am informing the school that I will be away from school for the rest of
Term 1 and Mr Barrett will be Acting Headmaster in my short absence. I look forward to seeing you all again in Term 2 2022

1st XV Summer Training Squad Camp
The Hastings Boys ' High School 1st XV Summer Training Squad reassembled in the last week of the school holidays for a four day camp. The squad got together for the first time in October 2021 to outline the pre-season calendar and for each player to be fitness tested and have their own personal training programme outlined for them.
The purpose of the camp was to reassess fitness levels, introduce some game orientated plans but most importantly outline and identify our team culture. The squad was based at the Riverbend Christian Camp for three days and two nights.
Activities included an excursion to Ocean Beach, group activities at camp, a quiz and the annual George Lowe run up Te Mata Peak. The boys were tested both physically and mentally and all of them were outstanding with their efforts. The camp has provided a great platform on which to launch our 2022 campaign.
