LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Arleta Families and Caregivers,
Below are excerpts from a message our superintendent, Dr. Kimberlee Armstrong, sent PPS staff and partners this week that our school counselors and I feel are very important and want to share with you. There are two resources linked below for immigrant rights. We hope to share more resources in the coming weeks and are here for support.
From Dr. Armstrong’s message: We understand that the upcoming federal leadership transition may bring feelings of uncertainty for people in our community. This is especially true for many immigrants and people in marginalized communities. We also know that many of our students and families are experiencing similar feelings of fear and unease.
At Portland Public Schools, our commitment to equity and the inherent dignity of every individual remains steadfast. Our top priority is ensuring the safety and well-being of all students and staff, and we will continue to work tirelessly to uphold that responsibility. We are committed to upholding Oregon law prohibiting state and local law enforcement from arresting or detaining people based only on immigration status. Additionally, Oregon law protects student educational records from use for immigration actions.”

ARLETA CHESS TEAM ATTENDS PRACTICE TOURNAMENT - A HIGHLIGHT FROM MR. COOKE
Our chess team had a great time at the practice tournament last Saturday at Marysville. This annual tradition is a great way for kids to get some great experience playing in a tournament-style environment, without the pressure of a real tournament. Some mistakes were made, which is exactly what we want on this day. What better place to learn than at a practice tournament, and not a real one? If folks are looking for more tournament options (whether you're in chess club at Arleta or not), check out oscf.org. They're always adding new events. Here are some pictures from last Saturday.
GOLDILOCKS ON TRIAL AT ARLETA
This week, Ms. Bidney's class and Mr. Cooke's class did a play and a mock trial based off of the old Goldilocks tale. The kids in Ms. Bidney's class wrote, directed, made props and costumes, and starred in their own play, where Goldilocks was arrested at the end. Mr. Cooke's class took over the next day and put her on (a mock) trial, where the kids prepped questions that the witnesses on the other side didn't know about. They also prepared opening statements, closing arguments, and rebuttals. Both projects were a great way to work on writing, public speaking, cooperation, and many other important skills. Everyone in both classes did a fantastic job!

BEAT THE BELL
Our Motto is “I am because we are” and we use it to stretch ourselves from where we are now, to ensure a sense of belonging, love and joy for every single one of our students. It represents our goal of focusing on relationships and cooperative learning as we strive to create meaningful connections for our students in classrooms and across our school community. Our school goals are improving Reading and Math Achievement, and improving Sense of Belonging. We are focusing on elevating and affirming student voices, through teaching students how to engage in meaningful academic conversations, focusing on 3 specific parts of the day, one in literacy, one in math, and one in our Social Emotional Learning Time. For students to access that learning, individually but also collectively, we need them here regularly and on time so they can participate in all our efforts.
Towards that end we are running this column in the digest with handy tips to help families get out the door. Every family is different, and all tactics may not work for yours, but please check back here each week for tips to make the mornings smoother for you and your students.
Try These Tips For Smoother Mornings
- Give up on hair. We promise not to judge!
- Take advantage of free school breakfast; it’s earlier but some people swear by it!
- Talk about the Arleta School band and what you hope they’ll play in the morning; sing one of their songs!
