Principal News
Dear OES Parents,
Is your child learning English as a second language? If so, please read on…
Do you want to know how much English your child(ren) has learned at school? By taking the MLL ACCESS test, you will get your answers!
Purpose: The purpose of the test is to monitor your child’s English Academic Language proficiency progress in reading, writing, listening and speaking in grades K through 12.
The test will take place from January 27th to March 21st. Two consecutive mornings have been scheduled for your child to take this test. Students will spend about two-three hours per day on testing. Students are expected to arrive by 10:00 AM. Testing time will start about 10:15 AM. Students will be going home by 1:00 PM. If you are providing transportation, we will contact you once your child has finished the test. A snack will be provided for students, please make sure your child eats breakfast at home before coming for testing. Transportation will be provided if you live within the St. Paul perimeters. This test is done in-person at Como Park Elementary (Door #6).
Other important and district information
The ACCESS test is given annually to monitor students' progress in English Academic Language acquisition. This test will determine if the student will need more support in English or if the student is ready to exit the program.
Educators use ACCESS results to make decisions about students' English Academic Language instruction and about placing students into appropriate classes.
Testing:
In order for us to plan accordingly, we would like for all our Online families to fill out the Parent Response Form below and to let us know if transportation is needed, whether you are or not sending your child(ren) for testing.
We will stop sending you messages once you have completed the Parent Response Form.
Click here to fill out: Access Parent Response Form
If you have any additional questions or concerns, please contact the respective MLL teacher or Belinda Vang at 651-744-2081 or email sppsonlineschool.testing@spps.org.

Protocol for Managing Parent Classroom Interruptions During Online Instruction
SPPS Online offers a unique opportunity for students, parents, and the school to engage in their child's education. Google Meets focus on teaching and learning, maintaining consistency with traditional classrooms. Distraction-free learning environments are essential. Issues can be addressed in Google Meets, but not during live classroom sessions. Parents can arrange private discussions with teachers, but these must be done outside instructional time to maintain the online learning environment.
Please access and get familiar with this protocol. Your understanding and cooperation are highly appreciated. This protocol is available in three languages (English, Hmong, and Spanish).

Attendance Matters
January Attendance Contest
OES is hosting another attendance contest to encourage better attendance and participation in class. It is so important that students are attending every live classroom lesson, small group, and individual lesson in the morning and afternoon.
Attending school is more than just logging in for class. It is logging in on time and staying for the whole meeting. Also, when teachers call on students, it is important for students to respond. This shows us students are paying attention to the lesson.
In week two of our contest, almost every class made it! Just one more week of the contest!
Corrected phone number: 651-744-4707
It is important for your child to show up to class on time everyday. If your child will be absent from class please contact Belinda Vang via phone or email at your earliest convenience.

3rd Grade
Hello, 3rd Grade Families,
This week, the students began the Geometry unit. We will be talking about shapes, angles, and sides these next few weeks. Help your student build their math vocabulary by asking them to name different shapes that can be found all around you, including 3D shapes.
For Literacy, students are working on identifying character traits, writing words in their plural form, and continuing to work on opinion writing.
Lastly, it has recently come to my attention that there has been some misuse of our digital tools in our class. Please remind your student about online safety and proper use of their Gmail account. Please also check your student’s email on a weekly basis to ensure that they are using it appropriately.
Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
Best,
Ms. Moua
Please feel free to reach out to me via email: baokou.moua@spps.org
4th Grade
Dear 4th Grade Families,
Students are working on a research writing unit integrated with their Innovations class and Social Studies unit on the Regions of the United States. Each student is to choose one of the 5 Regions to research and write about. They should know what states, major landmarks, landforms and important economic factors exist in their region as well as fun facts about the climate, history and Indigenous people who have lived there. This unit will last another few weeks so talk to your child about what they’ve been learning!
In math, we just finished our unit about finding the area of rectangles when subtracting the area of a window or shaded area. We are now beginning a new unit on factors and multiples. As always, students should practice their multiplication and division facts on a regular basis at home to make these facts automatic, and that will greatly support the work they do in every unit at school.
Thank you for supporting your students by checking their Seesaw every week to make sure their work is done. Some students have been submitting empty work in order to make their “To Do” or “Drafts” look empty, so please make sure you look closely at these areas throughout the week. If you ever have any questions about their assignments don’t hesitate to reach out to me via email or text.
Please contact me any time:

Please be checking student’s work on Seesaw. There should not be anything in the student's draft or to do folders at the end of Friday except our ongoing writing project.
Please continue to reach out to me with questions and concerns.

Art
Kindergarten artists read the book, A color of his own by Leo Leoni and they created Chameleon drawings using color, pattern and overlapping shapes. We learned about adaptation of color changing with emotions, not to blend in but to communicate with other Chameleons.
Third grade artists read the book The Crayon Man and created their own inventions after learning about the invention of the crayon!

News from Nurse Jenny
Whooping Cough
Pertussis (also called whooping cough) has been reported among students at Saint Paul Public Schools and in our community.
Pertussis can be a serious bacterial illness. Pertussis may begin with a runny nose, sneezing, mild cough, and possibly a low-grade fever. After one to two weeks, the cough worsens and begins to occur in sudden, uncontrollable bursts. These coughing attacks can end in vomiting and/or in a high-pitched whooping noise. Coughing attacks often happen at night. Older children and adults may have a less typical cough. The cough can continue for up to three months.
People with pertussis should not go to school, work or any activities until they have finished five days of antibiotic treatment, unless they have already been coughing for three or more weeks. Although the cough can last longer than three weeks, a person is no longer contagious after the third week.
Pertussis can be less severe in adults and older children and when not recognized and treated, can be easily passed on to infants, who may become very ill. If you or your child have a cough and have had contact with someone with pertussis or have been coughing for seven days or longer, discuss pertussis with your healthcare provider.
Most children have been vaccinated for pertussis, but protection can decrease over time. People who have completed some or all of the recommended vaccinations for pertussis may still get pertussis disease but will generally have a milder illness. Now is a good time to ensure you are up to date on your pertussis vaccines.
For information on accessing your or your family's immunization records, visit Find My Immunization Record. More information on pertussis (whooping cough) can be found here.
Any questions can be directed to the St. Paul – Ramsey County Public Health Department at 651-238-3716 or the Minnesota Department of Health at 1-877-676-5414.
Please contact Contact Nurse Jenny if you want more information on any other health related topic at 651-419-1219 or Jennifer.martineau@spps.org.
