The Buzz
AUTUMN TERM - 19TH SEPTEMBER 2024
Message from the Executive Headteacher
It's been wonderful to see how quickly the children have settled into new routines, the children who are in reception and nursery are coming in so well and children in Y1 and Y2 are walking into school very sensibly. Reception children enjoyed their packed lunch this week and I'm sure will be ready for the excitement of hot dinners next week.
The 16 school council representatives are now in place and I have noticed how proudly the children are walking around school with their badges on. They are now the voice of the pupils for HISN and will be leading projects and feeding back to their classes for this year.
Despite the fact that the new academic year has just started we are already planning our open mornings, if your child is starting Nursery or Reception in September 2025 we are delighted to show you the school. Please book your slot via the website. This year we are offering a Saturday morning, 19th October, across both schools which is an opportunity for the whole family to attend both schools.
We really value volunteers and if you would like to volunteer at either school you must attend one of our short volunteer safeguarding briefings, which are being held on dates listed below. The presentations are run by Mrs Cook or Mr James and are the same, so you can attend either school.
Hampton Junior School - Friday 20th September at 2.15pm
Hampton Infant School and Nursery - Wednesday 25th September at 9am
Hampton Junior School - Friday 27th September at 9.15am
Finally I'm delighted that HPPA is here, the plans for exciting events for both schools are already underway and HJS will be doing the ever popular sponsored walk on Friday. Please ensure you have signed up to "Classlist" the new app which enables payment for HPPA items.
Have a wonderful weekend once it arrives.

If you have any problems accessing your Arbor School Shop, please contact the school office and they will be able to help you.
Please read the letter below from the school Governors regarding voluntary contributions 2024/25.

🟨 Nursery
Hello Nursery Families. We have had another fabulous week here in Nursery! Along with lots of wonderful playing, where we have been practising our Bee rules and being kind friends, we have also been very busy discussing our feelings and emotions. To help us use our words and describe our feelings, we have our special friend 'The Colour Monster', who has been teaching us that our feelings can be represented by colours. We have learnt our feelings come and go and that there are some amazing strategies that can help us regulate when we feel those big emotions.
To help us remember our colours, in Maths, we have been learning to match and compare coloured objects. We were amazed to find that colours can be seen everywhere and that we have noticed that there are different shades too...how interesting! I wonder where our curious brains will take us next week...
Time to talk Nursery
We all know how important talking at home is for exposing children to a wide range of vocabulary and ideas. This all helps them with their reading and to become future writers. Each week we will share an idea with you for 'talk homework' with your child.
This week, the children have spent time discussing their feelings. What kind of things make your child feel happy? What kind of things make them feel sad? Is there anything they could do to change how they feel, like cuddling a favourite teddy, playing with a special friend or having a bit of quiet time?
🟥 Reception
We've had another lovely week in Reception! The children have grown in confidence in their new learning spaces and practised how to line up and collect their food in the hall, ready for hot lunches to begin next week. We have all been enjoying the unexpected sunshine and had lots of fun playing with new friends and old in the garden.
Our focus text this week is, 'The Colour Monster', which we used as a hook to discuss our own emotions. The children enjoyed making faces to represent each emotion, as well as discussing what sort of things make them feel happy, sad, cross or calm.
In phonics we introduced the sounds a, i, m, s and t and the children had a go writing 'it' and 'at'. In maths, we practised recognising numerals one to five and counting objects to match the numbers.

🟦 Year 1
We have been having a SUPER time in Year 1! From superheroes to superstars, we have been doing some amazing pieces of descriptive writing based on our focus book ‘Superkid’ by Claire Freedman.
We began by designing our own superhero, first sharing what we thought our various super powers could be, before using our ideas create our own version of a superhero to write about in English. We gave our superhero a name and then used adjectives and nouns to describe our costumes and super powers.
We have been amazing the year 1 grown-ups in maths with our number skills this week, sorting and counting a variety of real-life objects, pictures, shapes and mathematical resources, as well as using mathematical representations and partner talk to explain our workings. We think we have made an amazing start to our year 1 mathematical journey!
Science this week has seen year 1 continue with our focus on the human body. We have enjoyed labelling the different parts of the body and studying the five senses, identifying the different things we can do with each sense. We had great fun on our senses scavenger hunt and can’t wait to look at each sense in greater depth in the coming weeks.
We have been looking at toys in history this week, comparing toys from the past to toys of today. We have been identifying and discussing the materials used in making toys and how and why these have changed over the years.
In art, we have continued focusing on our theme of ‘portraits’. We looked at different famous portrait artists and then tried our hand at drawing our very own self portraits, using mirrors to look at ourselves in detail before using our sketching pencils to produce our very own masterpieces.
We have been looking at the ‘computer’ itself when thinking about technology, in computing lessons this week. We discussed the main parts of the computer, how we turn it on and off, and how we use the mouse to navigate around the screen. We then practised doing this ourselves and used our own logins to access the computer.
🟩 Year 2
We have had another fantastic week in year 2! The children are settling in well and have been working incredibly hard, especially in English. This week, we have continued exploring our focus book, The Secret Sky Garden and we learnt about different features of a letter before planning and writing our own letter to Funni. We focused on asking Funni interesting questions using our question words in our letter such as: what is your favourite flower? And when are we going to fly our kites again?
In maths we have been building on our knowledge of place value. The children have been practising partitioning numbers into expanded form, using dienes to help understand how numbers can be partitioned in different ways. For example: 40 + 5 = 45, 30 + 15 = 45, and 20 + 25 = 45.
We have continued to look at everyday materials in science, focusing on absorbency. We conducted an experiment to test out which materials are the best at absorbing liquid to compare their suitability for different purposes.
We have been detectives in history, examining clues from various sources to learn more about the Great Fire of London. The children loved investigating and worked collaboratively to discover new information!
During Art, we used our knowledge from history to imagine what London might have looked like in 1666. The children then drew their own houses for a collage, painting them with watercolours.
The well being and safety of our children is everyone's responsibility. If you have concerns about a child please contact SPA on 547 5008 or out of hours on 0208 744 2442.
