October 7 - 11, 2024
Dear Open High Family,
It's another busy week at Open High (see below), and we want our students to want to be here! We're already seeing an uptick in student absenteeism, so this is a friendly reminder that on-time, regular attendance is critical for student success and wellbeing. We certainly want our ill students to stay home, but a doctor's note is required for 3 or more days. Be mindful of excessive tardies and early dismissals, and always provide an excused note or send an email/call our Office Associate Ryan Eldridge (reldridg@rvaschools.net / 804-780-4661). When students are unavoidably absent, they should check Google Classroom so they know what they're missing and what they need to make up. For more information please visit the RPS website. We are here to support our families, so never hesitate to reach out with questions or concerns!
Please join us for a Virtual PTSA Meeting on Tuesday, Oct 8 at 6:30 via Zoom. We always welcome new voices: https://rvaschools-net.zoom.us/j/81088052771?pwd=0lQVTljfIUlbmFJCI0wb5nXgHQr8aR.1

Monday is School Security Staff Day. While the new security measures have been an adjustment for us all, we're lucky to have such kind and caring peope here at Open. Thank you CSA Miller, Ms. T, and Lt. Coward for keeping us safe. We appreciate you!
VCU Tutoring, Room 209
All students are welcome, and some students are required to attend at least one session per week:
- Mondays lunchtime NEW!
- Tuesdays after school
- Thursdays lunchtime
All students are invited to attend a live performance of William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night on November 20th at VCU Theatre. This comedy devises a romantic plot around separated twins, misplaced passions, and mistaken identity, and it is certain to be an enjoyable experience! Student tickets are $10.00. Payments should be made online at https://osp.osmsinc.com/p/GB309-69 by 10/30/24. Ask your English teacher for a permission slip today!
We love highlighting students who are doing amazing things, and Open has so many! Read about our Senior Class President, Eastan Weber here: https://www.styleweekly.com/the-next-generation-4/ We're so proud of Eastan and the important work she's done and continues to do. If you want to highlight a student and their accomplishments, please send info to Clary at cwashing@rvaschools.net. Let's inspire each other!

No school for students
Last week I had the pleasure of chatting with juniors Michaela, Naomi, Siadatou, and E'yani at the first Pizza with the Principal. I thank them for their candor and good will. I'm always interested in hearing about students' experiences--good and bad--so we can improve what we do, provide insight, and empower young adults to make the most of their Open education. To continue building a positive, trusting, and inclusive school culture, I invite small groups of students to sign up for the next Pizza with the Principal.
Have a great week!
With love and gratitude,
Clary Carleton, Principal
