Parenting Corner (“Place Value”)
This past weekend I was mountain biking in The George Washington National Forest and I bumped into one of our MVES families who was enjoying a mid day hike. It reminded me how “sweet” it was to take my sons into the neighboring mountains when they were young (I often had to bribe them to keep climbing with the promise of Swedish Fish or Airheads awaiting them at the summit). 😀 When you ask Dr. Google about “place value,” you typically get the mathematical explanation of “the numerical value that a digit has by virtue of its position in a number.” At Mountain View we start teaching this type of place value beginning in first grade but we also teach another version of “place value” that emphasizes the environmental and historical significance of where we live in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. Consider taking time this weekend watching a sunset, or staring up into the night sky, or simply looking around your yard for confused critters who think winter is still a long way off! Teaching our kids that this place- our place- has value in its uniqueness is an important part of their learning. As someone whose childhood was spent on the asphalt prairie of Northern Virginia, thirty years ago I fell in love with The Valley’s natural beauty, its people, and its pace. Let’s work together to pass that love on to the next generation!
Help Wanted For Our Newcomer Program
As many of you know, Mountain View now hosts a regional newcomer program for kids to learn basic English skills. We’re looking for a part-time tutor! In addition to MVES students, we currently have kids from Lacey Spring, John Wayland, and Pleasant Valley who are new to our country and new to English. In a class of about a dozen students, we have students who speak Spanish, Russian, Hindi, Ukrainian, and Kurdish. While the teacher Ms. Morales and her full time assistant, Mr. Sanchez, are both bilingual and heritage Spanish speakers, we are looking for someone who could spend 15-20 hours a week in the classroom. If you might be interested, please let us know and apply here: https://rockingham.tedk12.com/hire/ViewJob.aspx?JobID=1317

Nov. Week 3: Outa My Comfort Zone! (Adaptations & Habitats)
Observation: Different animals live in different places.
Question: Why can you only find certain animals in certain places … a shark in the ocean, a camel in the desert, a polar bear in the snowy arctic?
Exploration:
What is your favorite animal? (can be a non-typical animal: axalotle, water bear, etc.)
What does it eat? What part of its body helps it find food?
Where does it live? What part of its body helps it live there?
What would happen to your animal if it was moved to another habitat?
Results: Take a picture of your tables and submit it to your teacher on SeeSaw!
Reflection:
Let’s think about people! How can people live in many different environments and habitats?
