Community celebration
Join us as we salute local veterans
Red Wing High School graduate and U.S. Army Sgt. Atreyu Moore will give the keynote address for the 2024 Community Veterans Day Commemoration on Friday, Nov. 8. The public event will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Red Wing High School gymnasium.
“We encourage anyone in the community to join us in saluting the area’s veterans and active duty personnel as well as the 2025 class members who have enlisted to serve our nation,” Superintendent Bob Jaszczak said. “This annual event also reminds our students to be grateful for the sacrifices made on their behalf.”
Moore graduated in 2018 and began basic training at age 17 at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, followed by field artillery training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and airborne school at Fort Benning, Georgia. He served four years in the 2nd Battalion 319th Airborne Field Artillery Regiment. He currently owns a small business and helps advise the Black Student Union at RWHS.
“I earned sergeant at age 21 and was the youngest noncommissioned officer in my battery at the time of my promotion,” Moore said. “Once I completed active duty I spent one year with the Minnesota National Guard.”
The Veterans Day Commemoration is always held the Friday before Veterans Day, which is Monday, Nov. 11. There will be a military color guard. Red Wing High School Concert Band, Ovation, and a Native American drummer will provide music.
All are welcome to attend. Please enter at the District Office, door No. 36. Veterans and guests will be escorted to seating on the gymnasium floor. There is an elevator available.
The event is sponsored by Red Wing Public Schools, Minnesota State College Southeast, Red Wing American Legion Post 54 and Beyond the Yellow Ribbon of Hiawatha Valley.
Snow days, E-learning days and late starts
Red Wing got its first taste of rainy-snow mix on Halloween, so real winter conditions -- and the potential changes to the school day schedule that ice and snow bring -- aren't far away.
Visit the District's Emergency School Closings webpage to learn how the District will alert you to snow days, E-learning days and late starts.

Helmets on? Check. Seat adjusted? Check. Working together? Check. Now we're ready to ride.
Bikes boost and benefiting Burnsiders!
By Sarah Dawson
Goodhue County Health & Human Services
Burnside Elementary School has acquired a set of adjustable bicycles that are being incorporated into the physical education curriculum. This purchase was made possible through a Minnesota Department of Transportation Safe Routes to School grant.
The SRTS program was established in 2005 through federal legislation to:
enable and encourage children, including those with disabilities, to walk and bicycle to school;
to make walking and bicycling to school safe and more appealing;
to facilitate the planning, development and implementation of projects that will improve safety, and reduce traffic, fuel consumption, and air pollution near schools.
Burnside worked with the Red Wing Safe Routes to School team to establish a Safe Routes to School Plan, which was finalized in June 2023. Burnside then applied for and received a Boost Grant to purchase 25-30 bicycles of various sizes, bicycle helmets, supplies and a portable storage trailer. Owning a bike fleet creates more opportunity to educate second through fourth grade students on safe biking skills.
“I’m excited to be able to provide hands-on bicycle training to the students here at Burnside Elementary School,” said Jennifer Grove, Burnside Elementary School principal. “We also look forward to adding to our bike fleet for use at our different buildings.”
In 2023, Minnesota mandated that all students in public schools must receive age-appropriate education related to safe walking and bicycling. MnDOT created a curriculum that Burnside Elementary school will use to teach roadway safety, so students are riding safely and obeying riding laws. All students now have the opportunity to bike whether or not they have access to a bicycle outside of school hours.
Students could use the bike skills they gain from the bike fleet to bike in their neighborhoods, to their bus stops, or to school. Walking and biking to school or the bus stop builds children’s confidence and independence, strengthens neighborhood connections, makes the students healthier, and gets the brain ready to learn. Encouraging students to walk or bike to school not only gives the child independence and fresh air, but also minimizes traffic near the school which increases safety at the school entrance and near the school for other children walking or biking.
Physical activity before and after school has shown to increase kids’ ability to focus when they arrive at school, which fits into the school’s larger goal of increased academic achievement.
Bus Stop & Walk nears an end
Burnside students will have the season's final Bus Stop & Walk on Wednesday, Nov. 7 -- weather permitting. Conditions should be a little lighter now that it's Central Standard Time.

1, 2, 3, BOO!
Math took a seasonal twist in Mrs. Larsen's grade 1 class when students played Boo Bump. The general rules are roll a die or dice and find the sum, cover a square that has that sum with your marker. If your partner is on a square with that sum, “bump” them and take their space.

Sign up for early childhood screening
Three sessions left in 2024
The years from birth to the start of kindergarten are an important time of rapid learning and growth. Early childhood screening is required for entrance in Minnesota’s public schools and must take place between age 3 and kindergarten. Please call 651-385-8000 to sign up for a screening date/time for your child. Screening is offered monthly at Colvill Family Center throughout the school year.
Dates are:
2024 -- Nov. 14 and Dec. 5.
2025 -- Jan. 9 and 23; Feb. 6 and 20; March 13 and 27; April 10 and 24; and May 14 and 15.
Screening is a quick, no-cost check of a child's vision and hearing, height and weight, immunization record and a review of health care coverage. Screeners also look for risk factors that may impact learning, such as use of large and small muscles, thinking, language and speaking skills. The screening includes a parent/guardian report of social-emotional development and a summary meeting. Early childhood screening provides the best opportunity for any health or developmental concerns to be found early.
