A Message from Ms. Vargas
Dear Peirce Families,
It is with bittersweet emotions that I officially announce the upcoming retirements of two Peirce educators who are pillars of our teaching staff: Gary Nye and Melina Crovo.
Mr. Nye, our P.E. teacher, will retire after school ends in June. Ms. Crovo, who teaches kindergarten, will leave her classroom position in June and then retire from Peirce in September. Both teachers have many years of service and dedication to students in the Newton Public Schools. For many families, students, and colleagues, it is challenging to imagine the Peirce School without them. I have personally witnessed former students return to Peirce to seek out these beloved teachers, and I have heard numerous accounts from caregivers about their invaluable impact on Peirce children. Please join me in congratulating both Mr. Nye and Ms. Crovo on this upcoming milestone and thanking them for their many contributions to our school.
In coming weeks, you will learn of ways that students and families may honor and celebrate their careers in our final months of school. Interviews to hire for P.E. and kindergarten are currently underway. New teachers for these positions should be announced in June.
Sincerely,
Andrea Vargas
Reminder: Class Placement Process
Re-shared from Peirce Principal News 4/7/24:
Teachers will soon be discussing class placement in preparation for next school year. Our goal will be to to create effective instructional groupings that take many factors into account: cultural backgrounds, achievement levels, special needs, 504 plans, English language learning support, and other unique student needs. While we know your children well, there may be additional information that you feel would be helpful for us to consider. Please note that your input is OPTIONAL and is not required in order to have your child’s needs met. If you choose to provide your input, we ask that you complete this form by Sunday, May 5th. Information received after this date may not be considered. Information given to staff in email, letters, and conversation may not be included in placement decisions. For organizational purposes, all requests must be documented in this form only. Please do not request a specific teacher as these requests cannot be honored among the many factors that inform our placement decisions.
Additionally, please contact our executive assistant, Trisha Carey, if your child will not be returning to Peirce next year.
A Message from SEPAC
Dear NPS Families,
As you may know, each year, parents, guardians, and students are able to nominate NPS and Out of District teachers and staff for a Special Education Parent Advisory Council (SEPAC) Award. A SEPAC Award recognizes exceptional NPS and Out of District teachers, aides, behavior therapists, psychologists, bus drivers, crossing guards, administrators, and other staff for the role they played in a student’s special education journey this past academic year. Interested in nominating an exceptional NPS or Out of District teacher and/or staff member? The deadline for nominations is Monday, May 13th. Here’s how the process works:
Submit a nomination through the nomination form
All celebratory nominations will be recognized
On Monday, June 3rd, your nominee will receive an email with the kind words you wrote about your nominee, including a short slideshow of anonymized nominations lifting up the good work taking place across the district. Each principal will receive a list of nominees from their school.
On Monday, June 10th from 5-6:30pm at Newton North High School Cafeteria, the SEPAC Board and Community will be hosting a SEPAC Awards Reception for nominees and their communities, and the families who nominated them. Please kindly save the date! Nominees either will receive a printed SEPAC Award at the reception or it will be delivered after to their home school.
Do you need to nominate everyone from your student’s team? Please only nominate the teachers and staff members who you feel have been exceptional!
Questions? Reach out to: newtonspecialeducationawards@gmail.com
Thank you so much for your participation recognizing the exceptional NPS and Out of District teachers and staff who work so hard to support special education students. Please help us share this message as widely as possible so the SEPAC Awards can reach all corners of our community!
Warmly,
2023-2024 SEPAC Board
Temple Shalom Parking Lot
Please note that there is now a 5 MPH speed limit in the Temple parking lot. All families and staff who use this lot are asked to be neighborly and safe by keeping to this speed limit. Additionally, if you should see cones set up in the entrance, please understand that spaces are being reserved for a special service. Temple Shalom is very kind to allow the Peirce community access to its parking lot on a regular basis.
Staff Spotlight: Dave McVey
Job Title:
Social Emotional Learning Interventionist
Job Description:
My short answer is helping kids to be happier while they're at school. Students learn better when they feel engaged, emotionally and physically safe, and significant. I support that by working with small and large groups of students to make and strengthen friendships, build confidence, develop social skills, and practice emotional regulation.
First Year at Peirce:
2013
Favorite Animal:
Cats. Specifically my cats, Luna and Junko.
Favorite Travel Destination:
Anywhere I can drive to. My family takes a road trip each summer -- last year we visited 18 states and 5 National Parks.
Favorite Book:
As a kid, Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls. Now, it would be Indigenous Continent by Pekka Hämäläinen
Hobbies:
I've been involved in rugby union in New England for over 20 years, as a player, coach, referee, and analyst. My club is Charles River RFC in Boston, and I'm a huge supporter of New England's professional team, the Free Jacks, who play in Quincy and won last year's championship.
Who inspires you?
My children, who are 6 and 10 years old. They mean everything to me and make me want to leave the world better than I found it.
What is the best part of your job?
Being able to change the way students experience school for the better. There are a myriad of reasons why kids feel unhappy or disconnected, and neither we as a community nor I as an individual can solve all of those problems. But I am very grateful that I get to spend my professional life working towards that goal regardless of how long the journey might be.
What can parents do to support the social-emotional development of younger kids?
Don't solve their problems for them. When they grow frustrated something isn't working out, or angry because their blocks fell, or sad because a friend did not play with them, validate those feelings -- all feelings are okay, and they all tell us something about ourselves or the world. But also encourage them to identify their problems, how it is making them feel, how serious the problem is, and what they can do themselves to solve it. This builds their resilience, letting them tolerate bigger frustrations without becoming emotionally dysregulated, and strengthens the executive functioning skills that allow them to set and meet goals.
