Walking Together in the Word

These devotional materials guide you through the Bible readings for the May 16, 2021 Sunday worship service. We pray they are a blessing to you and your family!

Why study God's Word and pray together?

• Bible study and prayer strengthens faith and brings you closer to God and to one another.
• Study of readings and hymns for the weekend prepares you for worship.
• The way parents express and model their faith helps shape young people’s faith lives.
• God's Word gives life!---new life now and eternal life with Jesus in heaven. (John 20:31)

• What did Jesus give to the disciples to equip them for their mission? What does He still give to us today? (see verse 14)

• Why would their (and our) faithful use of the Word bring the hatred of the world? (see John 15:18-25)

Read John 17:11-19.

The night before Jesus went to the cross to die for the sins of the world, He prayed for His disciples—and for us! Even as Jesus faced death, He was thinking about you and me. What great love He has for you! Jesus continues to pray to God the Father for us.

• How can you thank Him today for His love?

Meditate on this section of Scripture, using these prompts:

• What thoughts come to mind as you read this passage?
• What is confusing or surprising about this passage?
• What does this passage teach you about God, His love for you, and His will for your life?

And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.

1 John 5:11–12

May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us all (2 Corinthians 13:14).

Throughout the week, write prayers of praise, thanksgiving, and requests in a prayer journal or on a sheet of paper. Take turns praying when you gather for devotions.

• Why was 12 the appropriate number of apostles?

• What qualifications were considered to be essential to be nominated to fill Judas’ spot? Why do you think these were essential qualifications?

Read Acts 1:12-26.

After Jesus ascended to heaven, the disciples and other believers got together to pray constantly. Why do you think they did that? Through prayer, they could still talk with Jesus. We can talk with Jesus through prayer too!

• John is clear earlier in this chapter that the Holy Spirit testifies that Jesus is the very Son of God who died for our sins. How is that testimony about Jesus a life-changing influence on our lives?

• Why did John write this epistle? What good did it do for his hearers—and for us today? (see verse 13)

Read 1 John 5:9-15.

How do you know if something someone tells you is true? If it’s God speaking, you know it’s true! God says that He has given us eternal life through Jesus. We can believe it!

• What metaphor does the psalmist use to describe one who delights in and follows God’s law? (see verse 3)

• Compare this imagery with what Jesus says in John 15:1-17. What similarities do you see?

Read Psalm 1.

What does a tree need to grow and bear fruit? Good soil, sunshine, and water.

What do we need to grow in faith and love for God and others? God's Word! When we read and listen to God's Word, we are fed with His love and forgiveness and wisdom!

Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. I thank you my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You.
