SD Met Family Updates
One student at a time
December 21, 2024
Welcome to Winter Break!
Congratulations to all of our students for completing the Fall Semester! We wish every Met family a wonderful Winter Break and a happy holiday season full of memorable moments!
Exhibitions and Student Showcase!
Highlighting student learning!
We ended our fall semester with a busy two weeks filled with Exhibitions, where students presented their LTI Projects and internship experiences. Examples of LTI Projects included a brakes replacement at a mechanic shop, social media campaign for a non-profit, creating and teaching a lesson at an elementary school, and so much more!
As part of a redesign of our LTI Project and Exhibition structure, students presented their learning through structured presentations, evaluated by a panel of faculty, peers and, in most cases, their mentor, and supported by their advisors and family members. A revamped rubric and more authentic assessment strategy led to students taking their LTI Projects and Exhibition to a higher level of quality and audience engagement. Many students, staff, and parents remarked that these were the best Exhibitions they had participated in thus far at the Met!
In addition, on our last day of class, Wednesday, December 18, our student body enjoyed a Showcase of class projects. Featured projects included: 9th grade Humanities' colorful Identity Maps, 11th grade Humanities' War Unit, 9th grade Biology's interactive Digestive System, 12th grade Business Class's soft launch of the new student space "Panther Pantry," Met Media's creative student short films, and Studio Art's portrait gallery walk. Students used a "passport" to record their reflections and celebrations as they experienced each of the different Showcase projects. The diversity and depth of student learning at the Met was on full display, and we will use this experience to expand and deepen the Student Showcase for spring semester!
Experience the digestive system by creating "saliva" (slime!) in the Biology showcase.
Seniors welcome students to the Panther Pantry in the Business showcase.
Semester 1 Grades are Posted in PowerSchool
Final grades for Semester 1 can now be viewed in PowerSchool Parent/Student Portal. The final grades are also displayed on each student's transcript that can also be viewed in the portal. Please reach out to your student’s class teacher of record or Advisor if you have questions about a final grade.
If your student earned a D or an F in a core class, they are eligible to retake the course in Summer School (see the link below). There is also an opportunity to make up a course during the second semester by dual enrolling in an online class at the SDUSD Online Learning Academy.
If you need access to your Parent Portal, please reach out to our Mr. Moravec for the access codes and account setup procedures. Thank you for supporting your students in their academic journey this semester!
Looking ahead: Spring Semester starts on January 21!
Here is what to expect when your students return from Winter Break:
- Tuesday, Jan. 21, is an internship day. Students who are continuing their current internships or have finalized a new internship for Semester 2 should plan to attend their internship on Jan. 21 per their designated schedule.
- Students who do not have an internship should work on their internship search from home. Students do not attend school on Jan. 21 because Met staff will be having professional development in the morning. Advisors will reach out to their students regarding expectations and support for internship search.
- Wednesday, Jan. 22, is the first day of Met classes for ALL students, starting at 8:30 AM.
- Thursday, Jan. 23, is the first day of internship support classes for any students who do not have a Semester 2 internship lined up. If your student does not have an internship, they are REQUIRED to attend school on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30-11:30, beginning on Jan. 23, to work with their advisors on finding an internship.
- Tuesday, Jan. 28 - Met staff are having professional development in the morning, and students should not attend school. Students may connect with their advisors via preferred communication methods (e.g., call, text, email) in the afternoon for internship search support.
Mesa College Classes
Update from Mr. Moravec, School Counselor
Dear Met Families,
I’m pleased to inform you that students have successfully enrolled in their Mesa College classes for the Intersession and Spring semester! Intersession begins Monday, January 6th, and ends Friday, January 31st. The spring semester at Mesa College will begin on Monday, February 3rd, and end on Friday, June 2nd. To view their course schedule, students can log into their Mesa Student Portal (mySDCCD).
Please encourage your student to confirm their enrollment and review their class schedule prior to the start of the semester. Some students have short term (12-week or 8-week) courses. In these cases, students must be aware of start and end dates so that they do not miss the start of the classes.
Additionally, students should regularly check their Mesa College email account for any important updates and communications regarding their upcoming classes.
If your student has any questions or requires assistance, feel free to reach out to me. I'll be checking my email periodically over the break and will respond as quickly as possible. For more information on procedures and updates, students can refer to the Met/Mesa College Students Google Classroom.
Wishing you and your family a wonderful holiday season!
Best regards,
Mr. Moravec
Class of 2025
Financial Aid and Scholarships!
It’s time for our senior students and families to apply for Financial Aid and Scholarships for the 2025-2026 school year! The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and California Dream Act Application (CADAA) are now open.
Our Senior Advisors and Mr. Moravec have already assisted students with setting up their FSA ID for the FAFSA application. Parents/Guardians will also need to create their own FSA ID in order to help complete the application for their student. For more information and support, please visit this site and use this application link to access the FAFSA application.
No matter what pathway your student is pursuing, there is financial aid available to help. We strongly encourage all families to apply for financial aid, regardless of income. Completing the FAFSA or CADAA is a requirement for many higher education institutions, especially if your student is seeking merit-based scholarships. Additionally, submitting the FAFSA or CADAA is necessary to be considered for the California Promise Grant at California Community Colleges.
Deadlines for FAFSA or CADAA:
- For 4-Year Universities: The state priority deadline is March 3, 2025.
- For Community Colleges: The deadline is September 2, 2025.
Scholarship Opportunities: Mr. Moravec regularly posts scholarship search links and information for seniors in the Class of 2025 College and Postsecondary Info Google Classroom (Class Code: b44kgvq). Check the top post for the latest links. Don’t miss out on these important opportunities to support your student’s future!
