Lambs Ledger
February 2024
Message from the Principal, Jamie McCarthy
We are so excited for February because it brings consistency to our schedule! The next few months is where we see the most growth in our students. Consistency allows us to be intentional with our instruction.
We will be celebrating Black History Month at Lambs with focus on "African Americans in the Arts!" Each morning our news team will highlight a person who made or is making a difference or impact in our world. Later in the month, the SAIL students will host a Wax Museum for us to learn more about these important individuals. Together, will also create a school quilt that will highlight these wonderful people. Students will also have an opportunity to learn by attending an assembly later in the month called “Rhythms of Heritage” - A Journey Through African American Arts. I encourage you to ask your student's what they have learned throughout the month!
It wouldn't be a principal's message if I didn't take advantage of the opportunity to communicate about attendance. Attendance rates and academic achievement have a direct correlation. You cannot replace in person instruction. Please make every effort to be on time and present for school. Good habits start early!
Thank you for being our teammates and supporting us as we put forth 100% everyday to ensure that Lambs students are getting the best education possible!
Did you know?
Why do we celebrate Black History Month?
Carter G.Woodson envisioned a weeklong celebration to encourage the coordinated teaching of Black history in public schools. He designated the second week of February as Negro History Week and galvanized fellow historians through the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, which he founded in 1915. (ASNLH later became ASALH.)February was chosen primarily because the second week of the month coincides with the birthdays of both Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. Lincoln was influential in the emancipation of slaves, and Douglass, a former slave, was a prominent leader in the abolitionist movement, which fought to end slavery.
Lincoln and Douglass were each born in the second week of February, so it was traditionally a time when African Americans would hold celebrations in honor of emancipation, Kaplan said. (Douglass' exact date of birth wasn't recorded, but he came to celebrate it on Feb. 14.)
Thus, Woodson created Negro History Week around the two birthdays as a way of "commemorating the black past," according to ASALH.The ACCESS Testing Window is January 22nd - March 8th
Our Annual English Proficiency Test, or ACCESS Test, will begin on Monday, January 29th. All multilingual students will be taking this test. Together, we have analyzed past scores and the students have made goals to increase their scores in the appropriate domains. There is no need to study for this test! We have been working all year practicing our English together in class!"

PE with Coach Wilber: Hello Lamb's Families!!
CD/K--we have been learning about the January muscle of the month, the gastrocnemius muscle, commonly known as the calf muscle, and incorporating exercises that help improve the strength in this muscle. We have started one of my favorite units to teach in PE, Parachute Activities, to continue to work on teamwork & sportsmanship, and will continue this unit into February.
1st/2nd/3rd--we have started one of my favorite units to teach in PE, Parachute Activities, to continue to work on teamwork & sportsmanship, and will continue this unit into February, we will then start our striking and hitting unit, where we will explore this unit using stations and small group work (volleyball skills, long handled implements, etc), and trying to be outside more as the weather is becoming nicer.
4th/5th--we have been continuing to work on our throwing and catching skills this month and allowing students to progress at their own pace and comfort level. We will be completing this unit in the upcoming weeks, and moving into our Volleyball Skills unit for about 4-5 weeks.
As always if you have any questions or need further clarifications please don't hesitate to reach out or send a message. The Quarter #3 Special Area Schedule will start at the end of January, please double check your child's PE day so your child has the proper footwear so that they can be successful in PE class!!
