North High Newsletter
April 2023
From the Principal
Greetings Viking Families,
Thank you to everyone who participated in Parent-Teacher Conferences. The 4th Quarter is underway, and we are in the homestretch of the 22-23 school year. Please note the following priorities for the Viking Community:
PTSO Membership/Leadership
Consider joining the PTSO to support student activities and educational opportunities that go beyond the school room doors. We are looking for parents/guardians interested in serving on committees as well as leadership roles. We have enjoyed long-standing support and partnership from this dedicated group of people. We hope you will continue this tradition by giving your time and talent. Anyone interested in learning more about the PTSO can attend the next meeting on Tuesday, April 11th at 6pm in the Harvey Conference Room or contact: OmahaNorthPTSO@gmail.com.
Every Minutes Counts
As we finish the school year strong, remind and encourage students to be on time each day, attend every class and stay engaged until the end of the school day. We continue to support and redirect students who are showing up late, skipping classes or trying to leave before the school day ends. Students must learn that every minute counts and impacts learning, their attendance record, and the overall school climate. Regular attendance and consistent effort are life-skills that will serve students well in college, career, and life.
Be a Viking-Responsible, Respectful and Accountable
We are committed to the academic, social, emotional, and behavioral development of all students. We are working hard to help students develop problem solving, coping, and emotional regulation skills. We know that hurting people hurt people. We have resources available to assist students and ask that you reiterate the importance of making good decisions and being their best selves. If you feel that your student(s) needs additional support, please contact the school to speak with their counselor or our school social worker.
We are proud of our students and look forward to celebrating their accomplishments in the coming weeks culminating with graduation on Tuesday, May 23rd at 7pm at Baxter Arena.
Please read this newsletter carefully for important dates and upcoming events. As always, we thank you for your continued support and involvement in the Viking Community. If you have any questions, please call us 531-299-2700.

APUSH students visit Union Pacific Museum
Students from Mr. Zimmer’s AP US History class took a field trip to the Union Pacific Museum in Council Bluffs, Iowa on Tuesday March 21st. The 11 freshmen enjoyed connecting topics from class to artifacts from the railroad industry whose roots are planted just across the river in Council Bluffs. Students were able to take in and enjoy many exhibits as well as creating their own museum exhibits and displaying them for one another.
UNO Biomechanics Field Trip
Anatomy and Physiology students and Human Body Systems students recently had the chance to visit the UNO Biomechanics laboratory to see modern applications for their learning. Pictured here Ayush Bhattarai (11) attempts to use a prosthetic hand to lift a small block as Cameron Fritton (12) looks on.
Students also had the opportunity to see UNO's 6 million dollar virtual reality system. This system is used to simulate environments and observe individual's walking patterns and much more.

Viking students support students at Ponca Elementary
Sawyer Johnson (12), top, conducts a physics demonstration for elementary school students at Ponca elementary school. Cans filled with hot water vapor are placed in an ice bath, causing them to instantly crumple.
Carlo Santos (12), bottom, demonstrates how a hard boiled egg can be pulled into a flask using temperature change.
Bacteria Art
Axton Jacobs (12) and Aaliyah Farmer (12), middle, check the results of their experiment. Their goal was to break open bacterial DNA and insert a piece of jellyfish DNA. If successful, their bacteria should glow. They succeeded and some students used their glowing bacteria to make "bacteria art"!
