Message from the Superintendent
Dear Parents and Community Members,
The month of May brought many celebrations to Tahoe Truckee Unified, one of which was Staff Appreciation Month. We recognized the contributions of all our incredible staff members and the positive difference each of you makes in the lives of our students.
We are so fortunate to have such a fantastic team at TTUSD, and we appreciate all that our educators and heroes behind the scenes do to positively impact the youth in our district.
Another call for celebration is for our Class of 2022 and all they have accomplished (and endured!) in their time with us. They are about to embark on a new and exciting chapter. Stanford, UC Berkeley, Columbia, Princeton, and UCLA are among the prestigious colleges and universities that students in our Class of 2022 have been accepted to.
In our next newsletter, we will share a more comprehensive list of the college, university, and trade school offers our upcoming graduates have received.
We again want to recognize all of our TTUSD Employees of the Year! And for more exciting news, on Friday, May 20, two of our schools had special visits from Placer County Superintendent of Schools, Gayle Garbolino-Mojica, who awarded two of our own with well-deserved honors. We are so proud!
Craig Rowe, Truckee High School English Teacher, was awarded the 2022 Placer County Teacher of the Year.
Hilary Jimenez, North Tahoe High School Wellness Center Liaison, was awarded the 2022 Placer County Classified School Employee of the Year in the Health & Student Services category.
Let’s celebrate all of our wonderful students and staff!
Carmen Ghysels
Superintendent Chief Learning Officer

She awarded Craig Rowe, Truckee High School English Teacher, the 2022 Placer County Teacher of the Year. Logan Mallonee, Truckee High School Principal, shared “Craig is an enthusiastic teacher who creates and supports daily opportunities to inspire, prepare and empower students for college, career and a purposeful life. He lives this THS mission and truly makes a difference in the lives of students, guiding them to uncover their potential, pushing them to do great work, and helping them to find bright futures.”

Ms. Garbolino-Mojica also awarded Hilary Jimenez, North Tahoe High School Wellness Center Liaison, the 2022 Placer County Classified School Employee of the Year in the Health & Student Services category. Hilary asks questions when needed, stays silent when needed, and seeks resources when needed. There is not a better person to establish and maintain a high school wellness center.”
Switch from Nixle to CodeRED Emergency Alert System
IMPORTANT UPDATE from Truckee Police:
Truckee Police Department and the Truckee Fire Protection District are switching from Nixle to the CodeRED Emergency Alert System as our primary method of communication during critical incidents.
CodeRED is an opt-in notification system, and these alerts may be received as text, email, landline, cell phone, and TTY. By joining CodeRED, we will be on one platform with Nevada County creating continuity between our jurisdictions. Residents and visitors are encouraged to subscribe to CodeRED to stay informed in the event of an emergency.
If you are a subscriber of Nixle, you will need to subscribe to CodeRED. Beginning June 1, 2022, all emergency alert communications will be sent via CodeRED.
Register for CodeRED emergency alerts:
- Online at www.truckeepolice.com/disaster-preparedness/
- Call 211 or 1-833-DIAL211
- Text ReadyNevadaCounty to 99411 and follow the prompt to register
COVID update - stay healthy and safe
Over the last several weeks, our district has experienced a slight increase in our positive COVID cases. Because of this, we would like to remind our TTUSD community to please continue to follow and adhere to the COVID safety measures and guidelines. If an individual (student or staff) is not feeling well and exhibits COVID-like symptoms, they must remain at home until their symptoms have resolved and they produce a negative COVID test. If an individual attends school or work and they are sick/symptomatic, they are putting healthy individuals at risk, which could ultimately require the district to put more restrictive mitigation measures in place. TTUSD would like to maintain our current COVID protocols/mitigation efforts and prevent more restrictive measures, so please be mindful of the guidelines. By doing so, we can keep our students, staff and TTUSD community healthy and safe.
