Greetings from the STEAM Lab!
All students are keeping a STEAM notebook this year. The 5 steps of the Engineering Design Process will be applied to each project completed. At the end of the year, students will be able to reflect back on their year in STEAM. Students have been participating in Makerspace centers including Lego engineering and geoboards and completing task cards. Students are encouraged to challenge themselves by building the task cards using more than one materials, like legos and rubberbands. Students participate in a collaborative circle at the end of class and share their creations and ideas with their peers using engineering language.
News from the KRS Art Room
All classes have been working hard to finish up their recent projects! This week all classes looked at artists' use of perspective. All grades were challenged to create a-worm’s eye view of snow people at play. These projects should come home this week.
Happy Holidays!
News from Spanish Teacher Mrs. Dearborn
Dear families,
This month our Spanish class focused on two exciting topics:
Family members in spanish: The students practiced describing their families, making family trees and sharing the importance of family in their lives.
Las Posadas: Our students learned this tradition celebrated in Mexico and Latin America. We worked together to create a comparison chart that explores Las posadas and other holiday traditions, looking at similarities and differences in food, activities and meaning.
I encourage you to talk with your child about your own family traditions, especially during the holiday season. Thank you for your support as we explore language and culture!
Felices fiestas,
Mrs. Dearborn

What is your role at Kings Road School?
I teach Kindergarten at KRS, and I love welcoming the students to the school for the first time. Each day in kindergarten is full of new adventures and excitement, and I am thankful that I get to be a part of the students’ first school experience. One of my favorite things about teaching kindergarten is building relationships with the students and families and watching them grow throughout their years at KRS.
What are your qualifications to serve in your role?
This is my 10th year teaching. Throughout the years, I have learned the best ways to keep the students engaged and excited about learning. Over the past few years, I have worked hard in graduate school. I have my Masters in Education from TCNJ and my Orton Gillingham certification. This additional schooling has provided me with new tools to use in my classroom.
What do you like about Kings Road School?
I love so many things about KRS! I am very lucky to have so many amazing coworkers who not only support me within the school setting, but also outside of work as well. I have made great friendships that I will always treasure. I also love how supportive the families are in the Madison community. The KRS PTO is also extremely supportive and makes us feel appreciated every chance they get. KRS is more than just my workplace…it feels like home.
What is your favorite book?
My favorite book is Love You Forever by Robert Munsch. This book is so special to me because it is my mom’s favorite book too! It holds a very special meaning to my family and I. I even have the quote “I’ll love you forever, I’ll like you for always, as long as I’m living, my baby you’ll be” on jewelry and other gifts that I’ve received from my mother. It is truly a beautiful book that I hold close to my heart.
What do you like to do when you are not at Kings Road School?
When I am not at KRS, I am at the gym! I love fitness and lifting weights. I grew up doing competitive gymnastics, and I stay involved in the sport by taking adult gymnastics classes just for fun! I am also an aunt to two nephews and a niece. I spend a lot of time with all of the kids. Being an aunt is the most important role in my life. Creating memories with the kids and being involved in their lives means the world to me.
Recess in Cold Weather
Even during the cold weather, we are going to do our very best to go outside for recess and physical education class as much as possible. Please make sure that your child comes to school prepared to play in cold weather.
Fourth Grade Student Teachers
Fourth graders in Mrs. Schaefer's class taught a kindness lesson to their first grade buddies in Mrs. Koehler's first grade class. The fourth graders were observed complimenting, guiding, and encouraging their buddies. The fourth graders were excellent teachers and the first graders were fantastic participants.
