LISD to Discontinue IB Programme
Feb. 5, 2025
To the families and staff of Grandview Hills ES, Mason ES, Leander HS and Vandegrift HS:
In Leander ISD, we empower students to take ownership of their learning, develop a growth mindset, and confidently pursue their dreams. We are committed to providing rigorous, high-quality educational experiences, even as we adapt long-standing programs to meet evolving needs.
As we plan for the 2025-26 school year and navigate budgetary challenges, Leander ISD has made the difficult decision to remove International Baccalaureate (IB) programming across the district. We recognize the impact this has on the students, families and staff who have invested deeply in their IB communities over the years. While IB will no longer be offered, our commitment to providing advanced learning opportunities remains unchanged.
Impact to Schools with IB
At the two IB high schools – Leander HS and Vandegrift HS – a phased-out approach will minimize the impact to students currently in the IB Diploma Programme. That means that current seniors will be able to graduate this year and current juniors will have the opportunity to continue with the program during their senior year. Current freshmen and sophomores will work with their counselor to update their four-year plan to select other opportunities.
At the two IB elementary schools – Grandview Hills ES and Mason ES – the program will end at the conclusion of the 2024–25 school year.
Additional Information
It’s important to note that this was not a campus-based decision but rather one made at the district level, taking into account the larger budget constraints ahead.
While the formal IB designation will come to an end, the mindset and principles that define IB – critical thinking, inquiry and a focus on real-world connections – will stay at the heart of our instructional approach. Above all, we will continue to focus on doing what is right for kids.
We understand this news may raise questions, and we are committed to ensuring a smooth transition for our students and families and our staff. In the coming weeks, we will provide additional details and opportunities to engage in discussions about what this means for your child. In the meantime, please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions.
Thank you for your partnership in your child’s education. We appreciate your continued support as we work together to provide an exceptional learning experience for every student.
Sincerely,
Dustin Binnicker, Ed.D.
