Welcome to the Third Nine Weeks!
What an amazing first semester it has been! We are happy to be back at the Dawg House after Winter Break, and we are ready to kick off the second semester with some amazing learning! Our students have already been hard at work on the concepts detailed below, and we can't wait to see where this nine weeks takes us!
All Grade Levels
During the third nine weeks, all grade levels will be focusing on argumentative texts and writing. Students will continue to address central ideas and key details in the texts that they read, along with working to increase their reading comprehension levels and writing skills as they move toward the Milestones in May. Teachers will use informational text, narrative texts, and poetry from a variety of sources, including the new HMH Textbook and digital resources. Students and parents will be given ample notification of any novels to be used.
All students will be taking a Mock Writing Assessment on January 22, 2024 to determine readiness for the GMAS in May.

6th Grade
While our 6th graders will continue their focus on reading various texts and responding through constructed responses, they will integrate informational writing and evaluating arguments and working through fact vs. opinion. They will learn how to support their arguments with claims, supporting details, recognizing counterarguments, and effective conclusions.
7th Grade
7th graders will also be tackling informational and argumentative essay formation, along with the following reading focus: texts address similar themes or topics to compare the approaches the authors take, tracing the development of themes over the course of the text, analyzing how elements within a story interact, analyzing how word choice shapes tone, analyzing how the structure of texts relates to the whole, assessing how point of view shapes the content and style of a text, and evaluating content presented in diverse formats.
8th Grade
In addition to tackling informational and argumentative essay formation, 8th graders will also take a deeper dive into how various literary elements help to develop the ideas presented in a text. They will utilize various informational texts, poetry, and narrative texts to investigate these concepts!
Our mathematics department is continuing their work with the full implementation of the Georgia K-12 Mathematics standards that began last year. The new standards are Georgia-developed and were drafted by mathematics teachers in Georgia with input from educational leaders, parents, students, business and industry leaders, and community members. They are designed to provide a strong foundation, to be clear and understandable, and to present a reasonable amount of content in each year.
