MLK Day Human Rights Award
Congratulations to Davies High School student Florence Sherman on being recognized with a Martin Luther King Jr. Day Human Rights Youth Award by Fargo Human Rights Commission at its annual MLK Day Celebration on January 20! The award recognizes community members whose work exemplifies MLK's legacy and uplifts human rights.
Sherman is President of the North Dakota Association of Student Councils and the North Dakota State Representative for the National Student Council. She served as a keynote speaker at the Educational Justice Summit and has been actively involved in Umoja Writing Workshops and the Fargo Public Schools Long-Range Facility Planning Steering Committee. In her leadership roles, she has championed respect for diversity, amplified underrepresented voices and worked to dismantle systemic barriers in education.
Virtual Academy Homecoming Royals
Congratulations to Destiney Camp and Serenity Williams, who were crowned the first-ever Virtual Academy Homecoming Royals at the Virtual Academy Homecoming Coronation Ceremony on January 16! The Royals were selected from the Homecoming Court based on a points system. Points are awarded to individuals based on participation in Homecoming Week events combined with a student vote.
The VA Homecoming Court included Josiah Asante, Destiney Camp, Madyson Cummings, Isabella Nirschel, Lara Schott, Scarlett Sletmoe, Terth Tuel, Serenity Williams, and Maldini Willis.

Superintendent Search
The Board of Education of the City of Fargo is searching for its next Superintendent of Schools. Dr. Rupak Gandhi is resigning after seven years as the District's leader at the end of the 2024-25 school year. The Fargo Board of Education seeks an outstanding administrative leader who will provide strong leadership for the District and continue the tradition of excellence in education enjoyed by the district, students, and community it serves. Mental Health Series
The Mental Health Series from ParentGuidance.org is a powerful resource designed to support family mental health and well-being. Experts agree that adult involvement is important in a child's success. When caregivers have helpful tools, it benefits children, strengthens families, and contributes to a thriving community. Discovery Musical - Legally Blonde Jr.
Discovery Middle School presents the musical Legally Blonde Jr. from January 30 to February 1 at Discover Middle School. Thursday and Friday performances are at 7 p.m. with the Saturday performance are at 2 p.m. Admission is free.
Legally Blonde Jr., based on the motion picture, follows the transformation of Elle Woods as she tackles stereotypes, snobbery and scandal in pursuit of her dreams. When Elle's boyfriend, Warner, dumps her and heads to Harvard, claiming she's not "serious" enough, Elle takes matters into her own hands, crafting a showy song-and-dance personal essay and charming her way into law school. Befriending classmate, Emmett, and spunky hairdresser, Paulette, along the way, Elle finds that books and looks aren't mutually exclusive. As Elle begins outsmarting her peers, she realizes that law may be her natural calling after all.
Community Friends Preschool Program Application
Fargo Public Schools' Early Childhood Special Education program is seeking Community Friends to join its preschool classrooms. Community Friends are typically developing peers who will join the ECSE classrooms alongside the students with developmental delays or disabilities. Students must be 4 years old by July 31 and pass a developmental screening to be eligible for the program. The program is free of charge for families, but parents must provide transportation. The ECSE sessions are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Click here to apply for the ECSE Community Friends program.
Trollwood Summer Registration
Light up your summer! Spark your creativity, radiate confidence, and focus the spotlight on you at Trollwood Performing Arts School this summer with performing arts classes and performance opportunities for students currently in Grades K-12. Trollwood summer registration is now open.

Thank you to Minnkota Recycling, City of Fargo, and Metro Sports Foundation for the donation to the Fargo Public Schools Development Foundation to support the Milk and Elementary Snack Program through their Cans to Cartons Recycling Challenge! The recycling challenge raised $1,000 that was given as a Giving Hearts Day donation and will be matched, doubling to a $2,000 donation and providing 900 cartons of milk to students in need.

Giving Hearts Day
Giving Hearts Day, a 24-hour online giving event, is coming up on Thursday, February 13. The day is a large fundraising event that benefits North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota non-profits. Each organization finds a sponsor to generously match donations. Trollwood Performing Arts School and the Fargo Public Schools Development Foundation are both taking part. Tax deductible donations can be scheduled now. You may also wait to give on February 13.

One-Act Play Festival
Anything But a Cup
Ben Franklin Middle School teachers participated in underground spirit days last week. Without telling the students, the teachers all collaborated on different theme days to see if the students would catch on. Wednesday's theme was "Anything But a Cup Day," meaning teachers could use any item to drink out of, except a cup. (Photo courtesy Laura Jacobson)
Spartan Mentor Program
Members of the Spartan Leadership Academy Mentor Program celebrated the completion of the program for the first semester with a pizza party. During the program, the group of North High School 11th graders connected with Ben Franklin Middle School eighth graders with the intention of forming relationships, building a connection to their feeder school, and easing the younger students' transition to high school next year.
