MECCA GLEN MEMOS
NOVEMBER 2024
WORDS FROM MR. WALKER
Time continues to speed along as we enter November. We will be having our Remembrance Day Ceremony this Thursday Nov. 7th, all parents and community members are welcome to attend. This is also picture retake day for all students that require a retake of their school picture.
We will be having two different types of Parent Teacher Interviews in the month of November. The first is called Early Interviews and these interviews will be organized by the teachers, who get in contact with families. Not everyone will be called, these interviews are typically for students who may have interviews that will take longer than typical interview (medical plan, new student to the school, students with specific learning goals to go over….). The regular interviews will take place near the end of |November and we will have the schedule up for parents to book a minimum a week prior to the interview night. Booking for these interviews is done on line, if you have trouble booking when it is open please contact the office. A message will be sent out to all families when the booking opens up for access.
The volleyball season is coming to a close soon, our teams have done well this year and will be in the playoffs over the next couple of weeks. Thank you to all the parents for driving students to games and tournaments, it is still difficult to book buses (driver shortage) so we rely on parents for making away games possible. On that note if you’ve ever dreamed of being a bus driver please contact the Wolf Creek Transportation Department.
If you’re in the school in the next few weeks you will see a new face, we\d like to welcome Mr. Brendan Aspenes to our building. Mr. Aspenes is a practicum student from Burman University doing a practicum in our building as he works toward his education degree. Mr. Aspenes is working in the Grade ⅔ classroom with Mrs. Nickerson. If you ever need to get ahold of the teachers please remember they are teaching most of the time and may not check their email or Remind during class. If you have a message regarding that needs delivered please call the office with the message. Nicole and I will deliver that message to the teacher or the student. If it is a question or a conversation thread that may not require their immediate notice then please feel free to email or message the teacher directly.
I’d like to recognize the wonderful group of ladies who take care of our Hot Lunch Program. These ladies give up their time to come to the school and make these lunches happen whether it's organizing and delivering food or actually preparing the lunch themselves. Our school community is a big part of the strength of our school and we thank you.
As always if you have any questions or comments please don't hesitate to call or email me at the school.

October's Assembly
Following these acknowledgements we moved on to our cross country - top earners and top lap runners for each grade. The top 2 earners were Clint Vogelaar and Ava Schultz. These two students were each presented with a gift certificate. The top alp earners were as follows:
Kindergarten - Adin Stafford
Grade 1 - Colby Van Dobben
Grade 2 - Adelynn DeLeeuw
Grade 3 - Kirsten Van Dobben
Grade 4 - Andie Cox/Ava Schultz / Dallas Bysterveld
Grade 5 - Everett Kochanski
Grade 6 - Reese Pritchard
Grade 7 - Kayley Olson
Grade 8 - Tayvin DeLeeuw
Grade 9 - Kevin Lashuk
These students all got to enjoy a pizza party with Mr. Walker to celebrate.
To wrap the assembly Mr. Walker had chosen the Grade 6/7 class to participate in a game that involved each of these students tying a balloon on a string around their ankle and in each balloon was a class written on a rolled up piece of paper. The students were to try to pop one another's balloon until there was only one left standing. At the end of this 3 min chaos, we had one student left and when that balloon was popped, it was the STAFF that were the winners 🙂 Mr. Walker and Mrs. Norn will arrange to have something special for the staff before the end of the month.
Student Teacher
The Grade 2-3 class is excited to welcome Mr.Aspenes into our classroom! He will be with us until Dec.12th, completing his year 3 practicum.
Mr.Aspenes will be offering basketball conditioning sessions to the Gr.6-9 students starting Nov.4th. More information is soon to follow!
Scholastic Book Fair NOV 5-7
It's Book Fair Time!
We will be hosting our annual Scholastic book fair from November 4th - 7th. This year we will have the fair open for shoppers from 9am to 3pm daily with a special evening shopping time from 3pm to 5:30pm on the 7th only. Students will have the opportunity to bring home a wish list to share with their parents. If you are interested in browsing the book fair online, you may use this link to see what we have available this year. https://bookfairs.scholastic.ca/bf/meccaglenschool1. Once you have accessed the Mecca Glen Book Fair homepage you can click on featured books, then click on junior or senior to view the catalog. If you wish to make an order but cannot attend the book fair you can email Ashley Parsons through the contact host option with your list. Payments can be made by cash or card at the school. Items will not be ordered until payment is received.
Classroom Champions
The Grade 8/9 class, along with their health teacher, Miss Robinson, would like to thank Baytex Energy in Calgary for the generous donation to fund the Classroom Champions project. Maddison Pearman, an Olympic Speed Skater who was raised in Ponoka, Alberta, chose our school to share in this mentorship program with her. We are looking forward to enhancing our health curriculum and incorporating SEL (Social Emotional Learning) into our lives to help us with mind set, goal setting, and perseverance, just to name a few of the benefits in being involved in this excellent program!
