RPS Update
May 10, 2024
Dear Families, Faculty, and Staff,
On Tuesday, May 14, the annual Town referendum will take place. On this day, the community has the opportunity to vote on the Town budgets, which includes the Board of Education budget. We are thrilled to announce that at the Annual Town Meeting the community voted to take the first step in upgrading the RHS auditorium through the development of an architectural design. A small step, but an important one in moving forward with upgrading our school and community spaces.
This week, the musical Aladdin showcased at Ridgebury. We are proud to see the expansion of musical performances to all of our elementary schools. The talent across our elementary schools, both in cast and crew, is going to make for some outstanding productions at East Ridge and Scotts Ridge Middle Schools next year.
Our schools are hustling with many year end events- some fun, others perhaps a little less….(exams!). Today, I joined our seniors for their 3rd annual RHS Senior Field Day. This newer tradition allows our seniors to join together one last time for some good old-fashioned fun. Despite the less-than-perfect weather, our students had a great time, and our faculty volunteers are outstanding. Thank you to each and every one of them. Soon, there will be many open parking spaces at RHS as seniors venture out into the real world of work through their senior internships. You will see our young adults across the community, building their level of understanding of the intricacies of different organizations, including our schools.
We end the week by extending our gratitude to our educators for Teacher Appreciation Week, as well as our school nurses. You can watch a short video shared with our faculty here.
Happy Mother’s Day! Have a wonderful weekend.
Warmly,
Susie

Important District News and Reminders
We have a charged-up episode of Tiger Talk! Joining host Dr. Wes DeSantis is Dwayne Escola, the chair of the Ridgefield Energy Task Force. They discuss the environmental impacts of installing solar panels on our schools, the up-and-coming solar canopies that will be installed in the high school parking lot this summer, and some of the future endeavors that the task force is looking forward to. Thanks for listening!

In the Classroom
Eco-Engineering—Materials and Design for Different Climates
Recently, East Ridge eighth-grade science students started their final unit—human impact on the ecosystem. ERMS teacher David Bozzuto explains, "Civil and environmental engineers must take into consideration the climate and the type of land where they are building to ensure that the type of structure chosen will suit the environment. Students brainstormed in working groups and discussed the different types of materials used to build houses in various climates. They built small models of houses and tested them in different climates."

SHHHHHH! RHS Unified Arts Makes Cards for Moms
On Wednesday, RHS Unified Arts students used fresh violets, creativity, and love to make beautiful Mother's Day cards. Unified Arts is a new class at RHS, taught by Jane Grassi, which aims to attract special and general education students. Junior Kate Holbert shown in the photos upper right and lower right above writes, "I love everything about that class. It makes me so happy and I wish I could take it every day in every semester. I wish more kids would take the class. This group of kids are the kindest hearted, the most positive, and the best classmates I could have ever imagined!" Happy Mother's Day!
May 29 Is Premiere of Blue Hour—An Original Composition for RPS
RPS in collaboration with Ridgefield Music Parents, a dedicated group of parent partners, funded the commission of "Blue Hour," by Jessica Meyer. The composer was at East Ridge last week to work with Symphonic Director Shane Peters, Co-Director Juliana Chetcuti, and the Middle School Symphonic Orchestra students on the piece and run a workshop.
The public is invited to the "Blue Hour" premiere on May 29 at 7 pm at East Ridge Middle School.
Parents Share Their Talents
Let's hear it for RPS parents!!! Teacher Appreciation Week might be the week during the school year when RPS parents and PTAs shine the most. RPS PTAs' creativity in celebrating teachers with flowers, cards, treats, and more is impressive. But RPS parents and PTAs lend their talents to our schools all the time. Branchville's production of The Little Mermaid is one example. Parents Eugenia and Matt Rowe worked with the BES team to create the sumptuous under-the-sea sets.
Eugenia writes, "Everyone went far and beyond to thank my husband Matt and I for our contributions to the musical, and we are so grateful! Our music teacher Mrs.Anderson, and every staff member that we bump into at the school have been our greatest cheerleaders! Seeing little kids’ eyes light up with excitement, and hearing all the “wows” just makes our day! We were so happy to be part of this great project for the 5th grade students, and see how they have matured in their last year of Elementary School! Another great memory for their childhood memory box!"
Thank you to Eugenia and Matt Rowe and all the parents across the district partnering with other parents and schools to create opportunities in and outside the classroom. Field Days, Art Shows, and Gala Seasons are in full swing! Thank you to everyone who volunteers their time. To learn about PTA leadership openings, please read your school's PTA/PTSA newsletter.
Aladdin Jr. at Ridgebury
How is it possible that there are so many talented students at each of our six elementary schools?!? Ridgebury Elementary put on the adorable musical Âladdin, JR. this week—with a performance tonight—which completes musicals at every elementary school. Directed by RES paraeducator Joyce Ottinger with help from many (see the full playbill here), the play gave the audience a great Arabian night. Bravo!

110 RHS Students Earn Seal of Biliteracy
RHS World Language Chair Allyson Powers reports that her department awarded 99 Seals of Biliteracy to seniors studying languages at RHS and 11 Seals of Biliteracy to students who speak or have learned another language at home. The Connecticut State Seal of Biliteracy recognizes public high school graduates who have attained a level of proficiency in English and one or more other languages. RHS Excitedly Awaits New Mural
Submitted by RPS Special Correspondent, Mae Carpenter, RHS Grade 9
With the recent decision by Town Hall to not raise a pride flag this year, the RHS Gender and Sexuality Club (GSA) is excited to start a new mural dedicated to the LGBTQIA+ community.
Its main purpose is to increase visibility, while serving as a beautiful and permanent art piece, reinventing what a traditional mural looks like at RHS. “Installing something significant such as a mural is a necessary step toward recognizing and accepting all students who attend RHS,” club member and senior Levi Groth says.
At a meeting with RHS Principal Dr Jacob Greenwood, club members discussed many different aspects of having a mural—Location, Design, Timeline, Dimensions, and Draft.
Members of the GSA suggested many ideas, such as putting pride flags on RHS staircase risers or a large design on the first floor. However, the idea that looks most promising for this year is painting the pawprints near the Community entrance (current photo below) with the Pride flag colors. That isn’t to say the other designs will not happen. Future club leaders are already preparing for the GSA's projects next year.
"A display of pride such as the 'pride paws' is a great way to show our support for queer students in our community. We are excited for future projects that will continue to demonstrate RHS's inclusivity," Sofia Mongardi and Ace Carpenter, future presidents of the GSA say in a joint statement.
“It's our students’ building and we want to celebrate all members of our student body, as well as all clubs,” Dr. Greenwood says.

Seniors Are Kids Again—FIELD DAY TODAY!
Today, students and staff didn't let the suboptimal weather ruin their fun. Kickball, an inflatable race course, face painting, a pie eating contest, food trucks, cornhold, and a principal in a dunk tank were all part of the third annual Senior Field Day. Thank you organizers who made this such a special send off and the four brave (hopefully not hypothermic) dunk tank survivors. We love you, Class of 2024!
RPS Parents Are the Best
Ridgebury parent Anna Ferrara drops off extra Teacher Appreciation flowers at Ann's Place—a Danbury nonprofit supporting cancer patients. Thank you, parents, PTAs, dads, and MOMS!
We would love to hear from you! Families and staff can submit stories, comments, or corrections to RPS Communications. Please follow us on Social Media with links below.
