Generative AI
Dear Parents/Guardians,
We are excited to share how advancements in Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) and large language models are transforming learning experiences for our students and impacting our daily lives.
What is Generative AI? AI, or Artificial Intelligence, refers to technology designed to perform tasks that typically require human intelligence, such as understanding language, solving problems, and making decisions. AI is already embedded in many tools that enhance education, from personalized learning platforms to smart tutoring systems.
What are Large Language Models? Large Language Models (LLMs) are a type of AI focused on understanding and generating human language. These models are trained on vast amounts of text, enabling them to assist with tasks like answering questions, summarizing information, translating languages, and generating creative content.
Benefits for Students:
Personalized Learning: AI adapts to each student's learning pace and style, offering customized resources and feedback.
Enhanced Engagement: Interactive AI-powered tools make learning more engaging through real-time responses and creative activities.
Support for Diverse Needs: AI can assist students with different learning needs, providing tailored support in areas like reading, writing, and comprehension.
Skill Development: Interacting with AI tools helps students develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and digital literacy skills, preparing them for the future.
Where Else Do We Encounter AI? Generative AI is not just in the classroom—it's part of everyday life for both students and parents:
Virtual Assistants: Tools like Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant use AI to answer questions, set reminders, and control smart home devices.
Streaming Services: Platforms like Netflix and Spotify use AI to recommend shows, movies, and music based on your preferences.
Social Media: AI curates content on social media platforms, suggesting posts, friends, and ads based on your interests.
E-commerce: Online shopping sites use AI to recommend products, offer personalized deals, and streamline the checkout process.
Navigation: GPS services like Google Maps and Waze rely on AI to provide real-time traffic updates and route suggestions.
As we integrate these advanced tools into our educational approach, we remain committed to ensuring a safe, supportive, and enriching environment for all students. In line with our district beliefs about artificial intelligence, we prioritize privacy and safety, ensuring equitable access, and using AI responsibly to enhance learning experiences. We strictly adhere to the age restrictions of each AI tool to ensure compliance with legal requirements and protect our students' privacy.
Furthermore, we want to emphasize the importance of academic integrity in our school community. Our district's academic integrity policy clearly outlines expectations around the use of AI tools. Students are expected to submit work that accurately represents their own knowledge and skills, and the use of AI in place of original work is only permitted when specifically authorized by staff. We encourage you to review the academic integrity section in the student handbook for more detailed guidelines.
We believe that these technologies will empower our students to reach their full potential and better navigate the AI-driven world around them. To learn more about our beliefs and approach to generative AI, please visit our website.
Signs of Suicide Program (SOS)
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Supporting students’ social-emotional well-being is an essential component to building a safe, supportive, and respectful learning environment. We understand a student’s mental health impacts every aspect of their life, from how they engage in relationships with peers and adults to how they engage in the academic learning within our schools.
In an effort to proactively support our students’ social-emotional health, D203 is continuing to partner with Elyssa’s Mission, a nonprofit organization dedicated to suicide prevention, to implement the Signs of Suicide (SOS) Program and/or refreshers in grades 6-12.
SOS is an evidence-based program that incorporates two key suicide prevention strategies:
Introducing a curriculum that raises awareness of suicide and mental health issues; and
Administering a brief screening for depression and other risk factors associated with suicidal thoughts and behaviors.
The program is designed to:
Increase knowledge and attitudes about depression;
Encourage students to seek help for themselves or on behalf of a friend;
Reduce stigma around mental illness; and
Engage parents and school staff as partners in suicide prevention.
Prior to the implementation of the program, your building principal will send a letter that includes detailed information about how the program will be presented to students and who to contact if you do not want your student to participate. Each building will have additional support available to meet with students as needed and parents will be informed of any additional support provided to their student.
Additional information about Elyssa’s Mission and the SOS program is available through the provided links.
If you have questions, please contact Kim Dreisbach, Supervisor of Social Work Services, at 630-579-7127 or kdreisbach@naperville203.org.
Sincerely,
Melissa McHenry
Assistant Superintendent of Student Services
