The Owl Quarterly
Osceola Virtual School Newsletter - Quarter 1 2024-2025
September 13, 2024
Principals Message:
Welcome to our electronic newsletter for 2024-2025.
Students, I hope that your school year has had a remarkable start. I am so proud to see you in Live Lessons each week with your cameras on. While attendance is expected, it is important that you take notes and participate in the lessons by answering questions in the chat box and using your microphone to share. The more you engage in the lesson the more that you will retain and the easier it is to build relationships with your classmates and teachers.
Parents, I invite you to attend our SAC meeting on the 3rd Thursday of each month at 1:00pm via ZOOM. Dr Jeriel Ortiz shares out the agenda and ZOOM link with all who wish to attend these meetings. Please email him at Jeriel.Ortiz@osceolaschools.net to make sure that you get the link for our next meeting.
OVS does our best to communicate with families via email, text, phone calls and REMIND. If you have not signed up with the OVS School Remind or Mr Arrington’s counselor Remind, it is extremely important to do so. (Please see additional information in the newsletter with these codes and instructions.) If you have changed your email or phone number, please call the office and tell your teachers all the new information. We must have the most current information so that we can stay in touch concerning your child’s education.
We are excited that in addition to our Art club and Paint Night, our Art teacher will be hosting some in-person lessons to assist students in various grade levels with their assignments/projects this year. Please watch your emails for messages from Ms Schlichter with dates from your grade level or art subject area.
We would love to highlight our students in this electronic newsletter and celebrate their accomplishments. Families, if your child has participated in an outside activity and won an award, please send the information to Mrs Katelyn Morgan at Katelyn.Morgan@osceolaschools.net so that we may celebrate together.
Thank you for your partnership,
Marcia J Clevenger, Osceola Virtual School Principal

What are the B.E.S.T. Standards?
B.E.S.T stands for Benchmarks for Excellent Student Thinking. The Florida BEST Standards are a set of academic standards that outline the knowledge and skills students should acquire in various subject areas throughout their K-12 education in Florida. These standards are designed to prepare students for college, career, and civic life.
What is the FAST Assessment?
- F.A.S.T. stands for The Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (FAST)
- Includes VPK through grade 10 Reading and VPK through grade 8 Mathematics assessments
- Administered 3x a year as a progress monitoring assessment (beginning, middle, and end of year)
- Aligned to the B.E.S.T. standards in reading and math
- Computer adaptive items that become progressively harder or easier as students successfully answer items
- Helps drive instruction and student achievement by providing real-time, immediate, and actionable data
- B.E.S.T. assessments that are not part of the FAST progress monitoring program include grades 4–10 Writing
- Grades 5-8 additionally take The Statewide Science Assessment which measures student achievement of the Florida's State Academic Standards in science
To learn more about these assessments, please see the Fact Sheet attachments below for your child's grade level.
What is Progress Monitoring?
Progress monitoring is a systematic approach to tracking a student's academic progress over time. It involves frequent assessments or checks to measure student learning and identifies areas where additional support may be needed. As mentioned above, students will be administrated the FAST assessments 3x this year for the following purposes:
PM1: This test is given at the beginning of the school year and is designed to be a baseline score so teachers can track student progress in showing proficiency in the B.E.S.T. standards.
PM2: This is given in the middle of the year once students have had the opportunity to learn grade-level standards and provides a mid-year score to compare to PM1 scores.
PM3: Test given at the end of the year and measures students' mastery of the B.E.S.T. Standards.
PM 1 & PM2 scores are used for instructional decision making throughout the year, while PM3 is used for school accountability purposes.

2024-2025 Code of Student Conduct
The School Board of Osceola County, Florida (Board) Rule 5.30, Student Control, in addition to Section 1006.07, Florida Statutes, requires the adoption of a Code of Student Conduct (Code). The School District of Osceola County (SDOC) has developed the Code to help students, parents/guardians, and school personnel understand the guidelines for maintaining a safe and orderly learning environment. The Code shall be discussed with students, school advisory committees, and parent/teacher associations at the beginning of each school year and quarterly thereafter and for transferring students upon their enrollment.
In order to conserve resources, schools will not distribute paper copies of the Code to every student. An electronic copy of the Code can be found online at the District website: Student Services, Code of Conduct or on SDOC school-issued devices. If you require a paper copy of the Code, please notify your SDOC school.
The Code applies to all SDOC students in Kindergarten through Grade 12, including high school and school age students attending either a technical center in a dual-enrollment program or a community school program for high school credit.
Each SDOC student must obey SDOC rules and the Code:
While on school grounds;
While being transported to or from school at public expense;
During school-sponsored activities, including, but not limited to distance learning, field trips, athletic functions, and similar
activities; and
If appropriate, any other area as permitted by Florida Statutes and/or State Board of Education Rules.
Every student received a copy of acknowledgment in their first day packets. Please be sure to sign and return to school acknowledging you have reviewed and know where to access the Code of Student Conduct.
You can view the Code of Student Conduct by clicking on the attachment below.
