Have your child bring to the office a piece of paper with their name, teacher, parent signature and the secret word that doesn't belong in our newsletter and they will be entered in a raffle.

Hello, Husmann Parents & Guardians!

Last Monday, upon returning from a long winter break, everyone picked up right where we left off at the end of 2024! It was a great week filled with re-connecting, sharing out about break, reviewing expectations (PBIS: safe, responsible & kind) and goals for the second half of the 2024-2025 school year.

Fastbridge testing occurs three times a year, and our winter session begins today! Fastbridge is a set of assessments that teachers use to measure student learning. Fastbridge scores help teachers to understand the type of teaching that each student needs. Please check-in with your child this week, and gain their perspective on how they think they performed on the tests. We have no doubt in our minds that all of our Cougars were ready to do their absolute best!

Lastly, we want to wish each of our Husmann families all the best in 2025!

District 47 online kindergarten registration for the 2025-26 school year will begin February 3. At that time, families can register their incoming kindergartener by completing the steps on the District 47 website at d47.org/registration. Early registration helps with adequate staffing, placement in your home school preference, and appropriate class size.

• Informational meetings about District 47's Dual Language program will be held for parents who have an incoming kindergarten student for the 2025-2026 school year. If you are interested in placing your child into the program and you do not have a child currently enrolled in the dual language program, attendance is required at one of these meetings. Flyer. • Families who currently have a child enrolled in the dual language program MUST complete the registration process for their incoming kindergarten student by Friday, March 21 to guarantee their place in the program. Students with siblings in dual language registered after this date will be added to the waitlist.

There are many things you can say to help your child figure out a word. Being flexible in problem-solving provides more information to allow the child to be successful.

To help a child use information in print (the way the word looks):

• Look at how the word begins and/or for parts you know (biggest)

• Read the words up to the tricky word and start it.

• Say more of the word.

• Does that look right to you?

To help a child use language structure (the way we talk):

• Does that sound right?

• Can we say it that way?

To help a child use meaning (of the story or illustrations):

• Tell yourself about the story

• Think about what would make sense.

To help a child use two sources of information:

• Think about what would look right and make sense.

• Think about what would make sense and start like that.

A frustrated reader is a reader who is not going to take necessary risks to improve his skills. If your child is still struggling after 5-6 seconds, say the word. Praise the child’s attempt by saying:

• I like the way you tried to help yourself.

• You were nearly right.

• You noticed it wasn’t right. What did you notice?

A reader is like an athlete. Frozen.The more a child reads, the better their reading becomes.

Due to the many changes in weather this time of year we recommend students are prepared for whatever the day may bring. Please make sure your child is prepared with a warm jacket, hat, gloves, etc. If your child wishes to play in the snow at recess they must wear snow pants and boots or they will be asked to stay on the blacktop. Due to rain or snow it may also be a good idea to keep an extra pair of pants and socks in your child's locker. Please label your child's items. The guidelines established by district 47 during cold weather are as follows:

• 15 degrees or warmer- Unlimited time spent outside
• Zero to 15 degrees above zero- 20 minutes of time spent outside
• Below zero- Students remain indoors
