St. John School - Empowering for Excellence
Dear St. John School students and families,
Congratulations! We've completed three weeks of school and are well on our way in this school year. It was so wonderful to see so many of you at Back to School Night last week. Thank you for your commitment to your child(ren)'s education. As mentioned, we have three 12pm dismissals. (9/9; 1/27; 3/31) All educators in the Archdiocese of San Francisco have professional development on those dates. This upcoming Monday 9/9 is a 12pm dismissal. Extended Care will be available.
Star Assessments 9/3-9/13
Our students are currently taking their STAR assessments. Learn more here. The Archdiocese of San Francisco uses Renaissance Star as our system-wide growth progress assessment tool. It is intended to be used as a tool to monitor overall progress and growth and provide benchmark data to identify if students are on track for high school and college readiness and are achieving sufficient growth. Your child's scores will be discussed with you at Parent-Teacher Conferences in November.
Patriot Day: 9/11- Annual Peace Prayer at 11am
We will be having our annual Peace Prayer on 9/11 at 11am. All are welcome. Please note that the parking lot will be closed. If you are joining us, please park on street.
1st PTG Meeting 9/18: 6pm
A representative from each family enrolled in St. John School is asked to attend our PTG Meeting. Please let the office or your child's teacher know if you are a representative is unable to attend.
Thank you all for:
- Being on time (8am start)
- Adhering to our Christian Code of Conduct when communicating with other community members
"St. Angela watch over the days of our youth. St. Ursula protect our future."

PTG
All parents, by virtue of being parents of students at St. John School, are members of the St. John PTG (Parent Teacher Group).
The Parent Teacher Group provides important services for the school community. Fundraisers and the yearly fee provide funds to service its programs. The goals of the PTG include: enrichment for the children, assistance to the faculty, and promotion of a strong sense of community spirit among the school families.
1st PTG Meeting: September 18th at 6pm in person! Free childcare is available for currently enrolled St. John School students.
PTG Meetings: Links are posted on SchoolSpeak. Come join us! (Attending counts towards volunteer hours.)
Fundraisers: Please check SchoolSpeak for more information.

Teach for Transformation
Below are the themes that we have been focusing on as a school-wide community. Please take the time to review the topics with your child(ren).
Week 1
This week we are learning about the skills that are most important for safety and order in
the classroom and on campus. The first two skills students will be learning about are
Getting Ready to Listen and Listening. Students will be learning their teacher’s class cue.
These cues are a way to gain students’ attention so that students can show they are ready
to listen. When the cue is given, students need to:
1. Stop what they are doing,
2. Clear away distractions,
3. Focus their attention and
4. Wait silently.
Ask your child or teen this week: What is your teacher’s class cue?
Week 2
This week we are learning about another skill important for safety and order—Following
Directions. All of the school rules and classroom rules that we ask students, and teachers,
and parents to follow, have important reasons behind them to make sure everyone is safe,
students can learn, and teachers can teach.
Ask your child or teen this week: What are your classroom rules?
Week 3
This week we are learning more about how to be good listeners. There are two more ways
to be a good listener. The first is to wait until someone is finished before speaking. In other
words, don’t interrupt or blurt out. The second is to listen so that you can build on what
others say.
Ask your child or teen this week: How are you doing with waiting until someone is finished
before speaking? How are you doing with not interrupting others or blurting out?
Week 4
This week we are learning more about different kinds of listening. The kind of listening that
is important for listening to directions in the classroom or when a teacher is teaching is
called focused listening. When the teacher is giving directions or an explanation, our
attention can fade or we can become distracted, and then we miss important
information. We can notice when we are distracted or our attention is fading and then
redirect our attention to the speaker or task at hand.
Ask your child or teen this week: Do you notice right away when you attention fades or
when you get distracted, or does your teacher say something to you and then you notice
you are distracted?

Health and Safety
Health and Safety
As always, the safety of our students and staff is our top priority.
Health Screening: All staff/students must screen for symptoms at home and stay home if they feel sick. Contact the school immediately, even on a non-school day if your child has any of the following symptoms or tests positive for COVID19:
- Fever, chills, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, headache, nausea/vomiting, diarrhea, or experiences change in their ability to taste or smell in the past 10 days.
Masks: Masks are optional and may be worn by all students/adults on campus indoors and outdoors. Thank you in advance for respecting each other's health choices.
Hygiene: Proper hand washing techniques and the use of hand sanitizer will be taught and enforced.
Clean Environment: Every classroom will continue to be ventilated. Daily cleaning of the school will continue.
Referral Incentive
We love our St. John School community and feel that our parents and families know us best. Our school has thrived when current families have referred their friends/acquaintances to us.
Referral Incentive: Refer a family to us! If they enroll- your family will receive a $250 tuition deduction per newly enrolled student. We have just a few more spots available in most grade levels.
