Summer Camps & Activities
Drop Off & Pick Up Reminders
As we near the end of the year these are just a few reminders to make drop off and pick up time efficient and safe.
- Avoid driving through the bus loops. This will help keep our busses running efficiently and safely.
- Please pull as far forward in the loop as possible before loading or unloading students. It may mean a few more steps to the door for your student, but it will help our traffic flow through the loops better.
- Do not park or drop off in either parking lot during drop off or pick up. Utilize the loops for student safety.
- Do not drop off on Washington Street or Cherry Street.
- If you have older students meeting younger siblings in the 5th or 6th grade halls, please arrange a meeting spot outside of WMS as we try to keep grade levels separate inside the building.
Are you moving this summer?

Updated Lunch Schedule
Please see the updated lunch schedule below that includes lunch times on Early Release Wednesdays.
Tier Time Information
Wheatridge Middle School is committed to meeting the needs of students academically. Tier time is built into the WMS schedule to support students to reach academic goals and deepen learning. Using data from assessments, class performance, and participation allows us to focus on strengthening skills for students through tired instruction. WMS staff will use data throughout the year to make needed adjustments to tier time groups.
Note About Early Release
If your student is staying after school on early release days, please do not plan to pick them up until 3:15, unless in the event of an emergency. At 3:15 students are dismissed to walk home or be picked up by car.
WMS School Calendar Update
As you may have noticed, accessing our WMS School Calendar looks a little different this year. On the WMS webpage you will find a tab on the right side labeled "School Calendar" (see screenshot in last week's edition). Click on the tab to find the most up-to-date school events calendar including athletic events, club meetings, school-wide events, etc.
Reporting An Absence & Signing A Student Out
Please include:
- Student Name
- Grade
- Reason for Absence
You may also call the WMS Main Office at 913.856.2900.
If you are needing to sign a student out during the school day please come to the WMS Main Office. You will need to ring the buzzer, show proper identification to the camera and be let into the foyer where you can sign your student out. Your student will meet you there. To save time, you can call the office when you are on your way and we will call them down and have them waiting in the office.
Attendance Matters
Excused Absence
Subject to USD 231 Board Policy, students who are enrolled in USD 231 schools shall regularly attend school and their classes unless they have any of the following reasons for an excused absence:
Personal illness (physician note may be required for accumulation of absences)
Serious illness or death in the family (mother, father, siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, death of a friend)
Necessary appointments that cannot be made outside the school day and are verified
Emergencies requiring a student’s service or presence at home and which are verified (can be verified with appointment card/note)
Obligatory religious observances of the student’s own faith
Family vacations arranged in advance with the school administration
Participation in a school-approved student activity, a Kansas State High School Activities Association sanctioned activity, or a District-approved function
Out of school suspension of 10 days or less
Unexcused Absences
Any absence for a school day or any significant part of a school day for reasons other than those in the handbook shall be considered an unexcused absence. Any absence for a school day or any significant part of a school day, even for the reasons listed, shall be considered an unexcused absence unless the student’s parent has knowledge of the absence and school officials are notified of the reason for the absence.
Once a student has been inexcusably absent for: three days in a row, five days in a semester, or seven days in a school year, the student becomes legally truant and subject to a formal truancy referral to the Johnson County truancy office.
Tardy Policy
A student is considered tardy to class when they enter the classroom after the bell has rung and they do not have a pass excusing the tardy. Missing the bus or oversleeping is not an excused tardy.
Students may accumulate three (3) tardies per quarter, per class, without consequence. Upon receiving the 4th tardy administrative consequences will apply.
WMS School Hours
7:50 a.m. - Doors open
8:00 a.m. - Students allowed in hallways and to lockers
8:10 a.m. - Tardy bell rings (Students must be in class and ready to learn!)
