IALAS June Newsletter
June 2024
President Message by María Burgos
IALAS Familia,
Thank you all for your continued leadership as we collaborate with dedicated educators and administrators to serve students across our communities for extended learning. Many of us are excited to welcome our students to a variety of summer enrichment programs designed to inspire and engage. These programs offer a wonderful opportunity for our students to continue learning and growing. Your efforts ensure that their educational journey remains vibrant and engaging throughout the summer.
The IALAS Executive Board is delighted to extend a heartfelt welcome to “Uly” Navarrete, the new ALAS Executive Director. We look forward to collaborating with him in the coming weeks to address our state affiliate goals and needs. Uly brings a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective that will undoubtedly enrich our organization. Please join us in warmly welcoming him to his new role!
This month, we take the time to honor and celebrate Juneteenth, a significant day in our history that marks the end of slavery in the United States. Juneteenth reminds us of the long journey toward freedom and equality, and it encourages us to reflect on our shared past, celebrate the progress we’ve made, and recommit ourselves to the ongoing fight for social justice. In our schools and communities, let’s continue to promote equity and inclusion, ensuring that all students have the opportunities and support they need to succeed. IALAS is proud to celebrate with our Black brothers and sisters, standing in solidarity as we honor their heritage and contributions, and work together towards a brighter, more equitable future.
Additionally, we are filled with pride as we recognize the achievements of Claudia Sheinbaum, the new female President of Mexico. This milestone highlights the powerful role of Latina women at the forefront of change and agency, inspiring us all to continue striving for progress and equality. The importance of having Latina representation in positions of leadership and influence cannot be overstated. It underscores the value and need for pipeline efforts to inspire and empower the next generation of Latina leaders, ensuring their voices and perspectives are integral to shaping our educational landscape.
We invite all our IALAS familia to attend the ALAS 21st National Education Summit, taking place in Portland, Oregon. This summit is a premier event that brings together educational leaders from across the nation to discuss and share best practices. More details about the conference, including sessions and speakers, are available in this month's newsletter. This is a unique opportunity for us to collaborate, learn from one another, and continue our collective work towards educational excellence and equity.
Thank you for your continued dedication to our students and our mission. We look forward to seeing you in Portland!
Warm regards,
María Burgos

Embracing MESSY Leadership
By Alyssa Gallagher, Rosie Connor
Drawing from the experiences of over 20,000 school leaders, 300 coaches, and 1,000 leadership experts, authors Alyssa Gallagher and Rosie Connor spotlight “the human side of school leadership” in all of its complexity in Embracing MESSY Leadership.
The authors offer practical strategies and tools derived from five years of research and coaching conversations. And what they found—across 37 countries, multiple leadership roles, and private, public, and not-for-profit sectors—was that half of these conversations emphasized the importance of knowing how to navigate human relationships in all their “messiness.”
MESSY, both a description of the complexities of leadership and an acronym for use in coaching conversations, captures five key mindsets for more impactful leadership in schools.
“What schools urgently need is a combination of both instructional leadership and transformational leadership,” the authors write. Their holistic approach, which improves both inter- and intrapersonal competencies, recognizes the challenging (and rewarding!) realities of school leadership and embraces the messiness of being a leader in today’s complex world.
