Parade, Pep Rally, Bonfire, DJ, Food Trucks and FUN ~ September 18th
The Homecoming Parade will start at 6:30pm this year, and we're hoping to make it a community event! We have lots of great things planned, so come out and support your Trojans! Food trucks will be on campus starting at 5:00pm, and the parade route will end on the north side of the school for the pep rally and bonfire, complete with a DJ! Bring your chairs and blankets, and spend the evening with us! Parade route and parking information can be found on the school website.
We're happy to have the community involved in this year's parade! Church youth groups, girl scout troops, athletic teams, school clubs... Make a float or just walk! We're excited to have the Hazel Green Youth Football and Cheerleaders, Meridianville Mayhem Softball, Girl Scout Troops #1283, #10944, #10749, KKT All Starz, Meridianville Eagles Youth Cheerleaders, and the Sartec K9 Unit, HGUMC Youth Group, in our parade this year! If you would like to be involved, complete the parade entry form, and return waivers for each person participating. No people may ride on the floats, but they are welcome to ride in a truck or trailer.
Food trucks will be on campus from 5:00-8:00pm, so skip the kitchen and have dinner here! Food Fighters Bustaurant, The Food Truck, and Ice Works.
Float Donations - As you are working on your class float, don't forget to chip in on the expenses. Donations can be made to each class president.

September 26 is a half-day of school for students. We will serve breakfast and lunch on this day as normal. Car riders and drivers will be dismissed at 11:30 a.m. Bus riders will be dismissed at 12:00 noon. The half-days are scheduled for this school year are September 26th, October 31st, February 13th, and April 17th. On these days, only students will be dismissed early and employees will participate in professional development for the remainder of the day.
Parent/Student Surveys - In an effort to improve system practices, Hazel Green High School is conducting a Student and Parent Survey. We value your opinion and ask that you take the time to complete this. Please be assured that your responses to this survey will be anonymous. Your honest opinion is appreciated. HGHS is hosting a Basketball Camp for boys and girls on October 4th from 8-12. Camp registration Fee is $35.00. Bring cash or check on day of camp. Camp instruction by nationally renowned Coach Tim Miller! Contact any Lady Trojan basketball player for registration form.
The senior panoramic picture is scheduled for September 23 at 9:00 a.m. in the old gym. All seniors are asked to wear red.
Picture News - Bill Miller will return September 22 (not Sept. 19 as originally scheduled) during lunch to bring proofs. Those who did not pick up proofs today may see Mrs. Sharpe in the front office for their pictures. All school picture proofs should be delivered now. All orders are due to the front office by September 18. Make checks payable to Bill Miller Photography.
Picture Retakes for underclassmen will be on October 14th. Retakes will only be available to students who were absent or bring a note from a parent requesting the retake. Morning tech students will need to have photos taken BEFORE they leave for tech at 8:30. Photographers will be ready to go at 8:00.
Running for Rowan is a mile fun run around the campuses of Hazel Green High School and Hazel Green Elementary School to benifit Rowan Scott. Rowan is a kindergarten student at Riverton Elementary that has spastic diaplegic cerebral palsy. She is having surgery in April to hopefully allow her to walk independently one day. All the proceeds from this event will go toward her medical expenses. There will also be a carnival area with $5 armbands. So come out and Run for Rowan on September 27th!

Huntsville Hospital Athlete of the Week - Applicants must be a high school senior, have a minimum GPA of 3.5 and display a history of athletic and academic accomplishments, as well as community/civic involvement. All weekly winners are invited to a banquet held in their honor in May, and two students are selected as Athletes of the Year. The two Athletes of the Year each receive a $1,000 scholarship. Complete the nomination form online or call (256) 265-5000 for more information. HGHS had several representatives last year so apply today!
Wendy’s High School Heisman - Seniors who excel in academics, athletics, and community involvement apply by October 3 at www.wendyshighschoolheisman.com. List Mrs. Hutchison (ahutchison@madison.k12.al.us) as the school contact. To be eligible, a student must have maintained at least a ‘B’ grade point average, participated in one of the 27 sports officially sanctioned by the National Federation of State High School Associations, and demonstrated active involvement in his or her community.
National Winners receive:
- Recognition during ESPN’s national telecast of the college Heisman Memorial Trophy presentation in New York City

College Fair in Atlanta - 100 Black Men of Atlanta, Inc. invites you and your students to the 2014 College Fair on Saturday, October 4, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Meet admission and financial aid officers from a number of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) along with other majority colleges and universities from Florida, Louisiana, Alabama, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. To make reservations to attend the College Fair, please complete the College Fair Registration Form(s). . All forms should be returned to our offices no later than Friday, September 19, 2014. Trojan Daily Tips - All the newest information will be at the top, followed by our Athletic Schedules and Current Announcements. Information from previous newsletters remains posted in Current Announcements until it expires. I welcome parents to send scores, pictures and updates from any Hazel Green sports or activities. We can't brag about it if we don't know about it. Scholarship and college visit information will only be posted once, and then it can be found on separate webpages for General Scholarships, College and University Scholarships, and School Visits and Special Programs.
Revision to Pre-Approved Absence Policy- Students requesting pre-approved, excused absences will need to turn the form in to Mrs. Sharp at least 20 days before the planned absence. Forms can be found on the school website.
Procedure for Riding the Bus with a Friend - Any student who plans to ride home on a bus with a friend or to another address should follow the procedures below. No student will be allowed to ride to a different address without verification of parent/guardian approval by a school official.
1. A parent/guardian note should be turned in before first block to the receptionist desk at the back of school. The note should contain the address and information for the bus driver and should include the date and a correct phone number for verification purposes.
2. Pick up the verified note from the receptionist during lunch.
3. Give the note to the bus driver when entering the bus at the end of the school day.
Juniors Have Free Access to ACT Online Prep - All juniors received a personal user name and password to the ACT Online Prep website. This is a great resource to be used in preparing for the ACT Plus Writing assessment which will be given to all of our juniors during school. All students are strongly encouraged to utilize this service provided to us. For more information, visit http://www.actstudent.org/onlineprep/.
First Priority/FCS meets every Tuesday morning at 7: 20 in the Choir Room. All students are welcome to attend.
Parenting Assistance Line: PAL is a service where anyone can call a toll free number 1-866-962-3030 and receive useful, practical information and assistance with developmental and parenting questions and concerns. Available 8:00am – 8:00pm (central time) Monday – Friday.
Recycle: Going green at “the Green”. The Hazel Green High School Special Education Department needs your old cell phones and ink cartridges. Items to be recycled can be given to a Special Education teacher or left for collection at the office. Your support of our recycling fundraiser is greatly appreciated.
Reward Cards: Parents/Students/Employees, please remember to use your reward cards when you visit Publix and Hazel Green Pharmacy. Every time you have them swipe your card, HGHS will receive a portion of the sale. If you need a reward card, just stop by the main office to pick one up.

Driver’s permit: Students /Parents, remember to pick up the Student Enrollment Form before you go to get your permit. The driver’s license department will not allow you to take the test unless you have this form and it cannot be faxed after you get there. These forms are good for 10 days only.
Loyalty Reward Tags: (Hazel Green Pharmacy Loyalty Key Tag Program) Parents/Students/Employees, please remember to use your loyalty key tag when you visit Hazel Green Pharmacy. Every time you purchase a Prescription/Gift/OTC have them swipe your tag. HGHS will receive a portion of the sale. If you need a loyalty key tag. Just stop by the main office to pick one up.
