The Owl Observer
Week of October 14
Week #16, Week of November 18th
Dear Students and Families,
Happy Week #16 WYWLA Families! Important notes are below!
Please remember that there will be no school for students on November 11th and November 12th. As we approach Veteran's Day on November 11th, we encourage each of the members of our school community to take a moment to reflect on the sacrifices and bravery of those who have served in the armed forces. This important day gives us an opportunity to express our gratitude to veterans for their commitment to protecting our freedoms and ensuring our safety.
Quick Notes & Reminders
- Helping Us Track Absences During Sick Season: With cold and flu season upon us, we understand that students may need time at home to recover. If your student is sick, please let us know by emailing jbalraj@wcpss.net, calling (919) 508-9088 EXT. 27119, or sending a note. This ensures we can properly record absences as excused. Thank you for helping us keep everything up to date and taking care of your student’s well-being!
- Educational Absences may be approved in North Carolina Schools. Two of those types are absences resulting from religious observances and educational opportunities of a significant nature. The Wake County Board of Education Policy 6000 requires advanced permission for excused absences for educational purposes. Educational absences include trips with clear educational connections. Family reunions, cruises, weekend getaways, and family vacations may not meet the threshold of an educational absences. They are important and we support holistic wellness, but please know that those travels are not educational absences.
- Required NC Absence Monitoring In the state of North Carolina, public schools are required to take and record attendance. Public schools are required to notify families of absences. All families will receive emails and printed attendance letters when students reach 3 or more absences, please note this is for both excused and unexcused absences. This is required by NC Law. Please contact your student's counselor or our social worker if you are concerned about your student's attendance.
- Please note that we have a new school nurse. WYWLA School Nurse: Ms. Valerie Harmon, RN (vharmon@wcpss.net)
- Do you need to update your contact information? Did your child miss a day of school and you need to email a note? Email our Data Manager - jbalraj@wcpss.net!
Sincerely,
Mariah Walker,
Principal

Outstanding WYWLA Leader of November: Mrs. Lowry
This month, we’re celebrating Mrs. Lowry for her outstanding dedication and connection with her students. Here’s what one of her students had to say:
“Mrs. Lowry should be recognized because she is a really good teacher who makes sure that everyone understands everything. She also connects with everyone on a personal and educational level.”
- WYWLA Student
Thank you, Mrs. Lowry, for making such a positive impact in our school community! 🌟
Fall Spirit Week
Students were reminded that during spirit week they are still unable to wear hats, full face masks, face paint, bandanas, and sunglasses. They can of course wear their uniform if they do not want to participate in the spirit days.

Say Something Anonymous Reporting
North Carolina requires all schools to provide a secure tip line for students to report safety concerns when they’re unable to reach a trusted adult. This tool is designed to support, not replace, open communication with safe adults and is part of a broader effort to ensure student well-being. Throughout November, students will receive training on how to use this tool, which includes a brief overview, a video, and a guide on its use. Parents are encouraged to visit the program’s website to learn more about this national platform and to have conversations with their students about the importance of sharing concerns with trusted adults. Any parent wishing to opt their child out of this training should email Mrs. Walker or Mrs. Little by November 15.
Parents should review link below for general information and program notes. Please send any questions to Mrs. Walker, Mrs. Greene Flowers, Mrs. Little, or Mrs. Whitehead.
