Application for Education Benefits
Please help us get there and make sure to complete a form for your children attending SPPS Online School! OES is only a few applications away from 100% completion!
It is critical that all families complete an Application for Education Benefits each school year. These applications determine how much funding your child’s school receives for educational programs and supports. Additionally, eligible families can qualify for other benefits. Paper applications are available at school or can be completed online at schoolcafe.com/spps.
Principal News
Dear OES Parents,
SPPS Online offers a unique opportunity for students, parents, and the school to engage in their child's education. Google Meets focus on teaching and learning, maintaining consistency with traditional classrooms. Distraction-free learning environments are essential.
We genuinely recognize that our backgrounds are diverse in terms of culture, economics, society, religion, and politics. We are also aware that we might not agree with the curriculum that the Department of Education and the school district have chosen.
Any Issue can be addressed in Google Meets, but not during live classroom sessions. Parents can arrange private discussions with teachers, but these must not occur during instruction time to maintain the online learning environment.
Sincerely,
John Osorio
Assistant Principal

4th and 5th Grade Family Tree - Health Presentations
5th grade lesson is tomorrow - November 11.
A health educator from Family Tree Clinic will be coming to the 4th grade classroom on November 18 and the 5th grade classroom on November 11 to discuss puberty and students’ changing bodies. This presentation covers Health Curriculum Standards and allows students to ask questions of experts in this topic. Please review the attachments that Family Tree Clinic has provided us and let us know if you have any other questions. You only need to return the letter if you DO NOT want your child to receive the presentation.

3rd Grade
Welcome to 3rd grade! I will be the substitute teacher while Ms. Moua is out. I look forward to learning with your students! You can email me at: lkoelfgen-faust.toc@spps.org
4th Grade
Students worked very hard this week on stretching their writing in the form of Opinion essays that included introductions, 3 paragraphs that justified their opinions with evidence and a conclusion. We also practiced using transitional phrases. Please ask them to show you their opinion essays as well as their summative assessment because they did a wonderful job!
This class excels at sharing and supporting one another during discussion time, and students are practicing giving positive, specific feedback to each other. Our next goal is practice engaging in academic dialogue with active listening where we respond to each other more than just taking turns sharing our ideas.
In Geography, 4th grade has been learning about maps, location and how to use latitude and longitude to find specific locations on a map. In math, we are using place value and the distributive property to do multiplication and division and representing our product with area models. Continuing to strengthen our basic facts is critical to supporting this work.

5th Grade
Hello 5th grade families!
We will be having our Family Tree puberty presentation on Monday, November 11th. If you choose NOT to have your child participate in this health presentation, email, text, or call me please. Your permission to participate is otherwise assumed.
Thank you to all of the families that were able to meet with me this week to talk about how we can continue to support your fifth graders this year! In social studies, we have finished up our initial study on Indigenous Nations in North America. Students talked about self confidence and dynamics in music class.
For writing, students have spent a few days working on choice projects. Some students have really shined during this time - ask your kiddo what they have been writing about!
For math, students have been focused on order of operations and we are moving into volume. If you have any type of blocks or lego at home, this can be very helpful for our learning!
Please continue to reach out with questions and concerns, as well as check your students “to do” and “in progress” folders on Seesaw - these will be empty by Friday end of day if they are keeping up!

Art
Welcome to week 10 of art! This was the third rotation of art for the 2nd and 5th graders. This month is National Native American Heritage Month and art students are taking this time to dive deeper into works of art by local MN artists. We are thinking about traditional materials and modern materials used for creating. Through this unit students are also encouraged to be thinking about their personal identities and cultures while making connections to the works.
2nd graders created art inspired by Frank Big Bear. They used animal imagery as the main subject and added symbols that represented them in some way.
5th grade artists looked at and discussed works by Dakota Hoska, Julie Buffalohead, and Moira Villiard. They then created their own animal motifs reflecting on use of color schemes and lines found in nature.

Physical Education
This week in PE the 2nd and 5th graders have been doing different exercises and movements in fun ways! This upcoming week I will have 1st graders and 4th graders again where we will continue working on improving our fitness levels (muscular endurance/strength, cardiovascular endurance, and flexibility). The hope is to get the students as much activity as possible during the times that we have them. We are also learning skills and movement patterns to improve coordination, and balance. Feel free to join in on the exercises with us to get a workout also!

Title I
Dear Parents,
Please spend some time talking to your kids about the Home-School Compact's Shared Responsibilities. Making sure that parents, instructors, and children are cooperating is our top priority. Each of us has a role to play in your child's academic achievement. We become more conscious of the behaviors we must follow in order to succeed after we have talked about and learnt about our responsibilities.
Please talk about the duties outlined in the Home-School Campact that you and your kid have.
During the next conferences, classroom teachers will discuss the Shared Responsibilities listed in the Home-School Compact for Student Achievement.
